Book Description
Excerpt from The North Carolina Teacher, Vol. 12 He deals in mystery and strange things, but he has them all from some other boy who knows, and he is therefore all right. But when you think of what little you recollect of it, and how much you once knew, isn't it pitiful how meagre the mystery and impressiveness that attends the organizations that men have formed? A boy is an odd piece of furniture, but he is the ground and chief ingredient of the man. Delude not yourself with the belief that the boy is not all he pretends to be, for he is a great deal more. He is an incomprehensible fellow to any one but another boy, and because he will presently grow into the awkward between hay-and-grass period that separates boyhood from manhood, and to a lum bering idiot then, don't signify that he is an idiot now He never is. But his Chrysalis state fetters him and makes him seem like one sometimes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from North Carolina Education, Vol. 14 By E. C. Brooks, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. While we have been discussing consolidation of rural districts, too little thought has been devoted to a building program for the large towns and cities. Small buildings and small school units have been located, as a rule, on very small lots, without any regard for the classification of pupils, the growth of population, or the future needs of the community. As a result, when the capacity of a building is reached, some other small lot is usually selected in some other section of the town, and another small building is erected. Book Description
Excerpt from North Carolina Journal of Education, 1897, Vol. 1 The slow growth in America of the idea of teaching reading and spelling by a rational method, when we consider the rapidity with which it spread on the continent, can be explained by the lack of legal power in the central school authority with us and by our devotion to English precedent. Obsolete methods of instruction in English schools are easily accounted for in the conservative spirit of that nation, which has been, until very recent years, quite as tenacious of its illiteracy as of so many of its other great and glorious institutions. While ambitious young men from our Ameri can colleges flock to the German universities, the American public school teacher, as a rule, seems content to-follow English precedent and preju dice, so far at least as concerns the teaching of reading and spelling, by far the two most impor tant branches in our school curriculum. The a, method still so popular in England was the main reliance of our teachers until about twenty years ago, when the Old English look-and-say method, under the less savage looking title of word method, became the Shibboleth of a party that cried aloud for it as an integral part of the new education. Perhaps the most popular book on teaching ever published in this country, the tables of stone of this new education gospel in America, asserts without even a suspicion of humor that phonic analysis has nothing whatever to do with that the best way to teach a child how to read a printed word is to hold up the object and write the name.
