Book Description
Excerpt from The Last Ninety Days of the War in North-Carolina The papers on the Last Ninety Days op the War in North-Carolina, which originally appeared in the New-York Watchman, and are now presented in book form, were commenced with no plan or intention of continuing them beyond two or three numbers. The unexpected favor with which they were received led to their extension, and finally resulted in their republication. To do justice to North-Carolina, and to place beyond cavil or reproach the attitude of her leaders at the close of the great Southern States Rights struggle - to present a faithful picture of the times, and a just judgment, whether writing of friend or foe, has been my sole object. Slight as these sketches are, they may claim at least the merit of truth, and this, I am persuaded, is no slight recommendation with tho truth-loving people of North-Carolina. Book Description
Excerpt from History of North Carolina IN the year 1700, when people ocked from all parts of the christian world, to see the solemnity Of the grand jubilee at Rome, my intention at that time being to travel, I accidentally met with a gentleman, who had been abroad, and was very well acquainted with the ways of living in both Indies; of whom having made inquiry concern ing them, he assured me that Carolina was the best country I could go to; and, that there then lay a ship in the Thames in which I might have my passage. I laid hold on this Opportunity, and was not long on board, before we fell down the river and sailed to Cowes; where, having taken in some passengers, we proceeded on our voyage, 'till we sprung a leak, and were forced into the Islands of Scilly. Here we spent about ten days in refitting. In which time we had a great deal of diversion in fishing and shooting on those rocky islands. The inhabitants were very courteous and civil, especially the governor, to whose good company and favor, we were very much obliged. Book Description
Excerpt from Guide to the Hall of History of North Carolina The Hall of History of North Carolina was first established by Fred A. Olds, as the director, in the west room of the State Museum, December 15, 1902. The installation, of objects began that day. Mr. Oldsbegan the collection twenty years before. Knowing this fact, Governor Alfred M. Scales in 1885 wrote a letter specially commending this work, saying that he hoped it would bring about the keeping of North Carolina relics in the State and prevent their dispersion in other parts of the country. The State Department of Agriculture provided a room for the historical collection, and the title "Hall of History" was given it by the director. The result of providing such a place was information as to the location of great numbers of objects. Visits were made to about fifty counties in a search for others. In ten years the hall was full, thousands of objects having been gathered, some coming from other States and all having historical value and forming a part of a connected story. Photographs were taken and used in illustrating the history of North Carolina. Special studies were made of the life of the Cherokee and Croatan Indians. Pictures were made of many historic buildings and scenes. Many valuable gifts were made and a generous spirit was shown by owners of relics in giving or lending these or allowing photographs or sketches to be made of them. The Hall of History remained in the Agricultural Building until 1914, when it was moved to its present quarters in the State Administration Building. Book Description
Excerpt from Sketches of North Carolina I have the usual to offer for the publication of this little volume. It will sufficiently appear, by both the matter and the style, that it was not originally intended to assume this shape. When my friend Mr. Hope first solicited me to write something for his journal, I consented only on condition that he would accept such papers as I might be able to prepare in the midst of the wearisome and unending duties which devolve upon a country lawyer. He was pleased to say that he preferred such spontaneous productions to more studied and elaborate essays, as being better adapted to the columns of a daily newspaper. Thus encouraged I began the task, selecting, naturally and almost instinctively, North Carolina as my theme. The sketches were written under most unfavorable circumstances; many were penciled off at night after a fatiguing day of labor in the court-house, and others whilst on the circuit, without books of reference, and sent immediately off to the editor. My professional brethren, at least, will appreciate the tread-mill existence from which they sprang. After a few numbers were published, Mr. Hope surprised me very much by copyrighting the series, and informing me of his wish to publish in book form. To this I yielded reluctantly. I was conscious of their defects, of their careless manner of preparation, of their scattered and disconnected order; and yet worse, I did not have leisure to rewrite, correct, or add to them. Still I yielded to Mr. Hopes wish, and although the success of the enterprise is of course entirely problematical, I do not, and shall not regret the attempt. Book Description
Excerpt from Reconstruction in North Carolina The author has sought throughout the work to divest himself of any prejudice in his treatment of a period which, while it closed before his birth, has been the cause of so much later bitterness, prejudice, and sectional mis understanding. He has held no thesis, but has sought only to present the truth, and, in the main, to relate rather than interpret. In his search for material one great obstacle has been found, namely, the marked disinclination of many of the actors in the period to discuss at all the matters therein involved. This will explain why so much of the material bearing on many disputed questions appears to be derived from one side. One or two Republicans of the period, however, have been of incalculable assistance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
