Book Description
Excerpt from North American Fauna But the time has not yet come for a satisfactory revision of the group, to attempt which at least specimens are requisite, collected so as to fully represent the seasonal phases of pelage obtaining at hundreds of more or less widely separated localities. These conditions are now realized to the fullest degree, for the number of specimens examined in the present revision exceeds The majority of these are contained in the extensive collection of the Biological Survey, which, under the direction of Dr. C. Hart Merriam, has been built up with special reference to the various life areas of North America, and without which no satisfactory study of this group would now be possible. In addition all the material in the more important public and private collections of America has been examined, and also important specimens belonging to Euro pean institutions, especially the British Museum. This material includes all the types, both of valid forms and of synonyms, known to be in existence. In almost all cases in which no types exist, good series of topotypes, or specimens from near. The type localities. Have been available. The American collections which have been thoroughly examined are distributed as follows: Biological Survey (including the collection of C. Hart Merriam, on deposit); U. S. National Museum; American Museum of Natural History, New York; Field Museum of Natural History. Chicago; Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge (now including the collection of E. A. And O. Bangs); and the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia (now including the collection of S. N. Ithoads). The individuals having charge of these collections have generously allowed the unrestricted use of their material. Special acknowledgments are due Dr. J. A. Allen, of New York: Mr. Outram Bangs, of Boston; Dr. F. IV. True, Mr. Gerrit S. Miller, jr., and Dr. M. W'. Lyon, jr., of Washington; Mr. Witmer Stone, of Philadelphia: and Drs. D. (i. Elliot and S. Book Description
Excerpt from North American Fauna No. 49: A Biological Survey of North Dakota; I. Physiography and Life Zones; II. The Mammals Elliott Coues, naturalist of the Northern Boundary Survey, in crossing the northern part of the State in 1873, collected many specimens and has included his records in various monographs and publications. J. A. Allen (1875, pp. 33 as naturalist of the North Pacific Railroad Expedition of 187 3, traveled from Fort Rice, on the Missouri, west to the Yellowstone River in Montana and re turned by nearly the same route, and published a list of the mam mals observed. Col. Theodore Roosevelt (1900, from his cattle ranch in the Little Missouri Badlands (1884 to gave a full and delightful account of the game and natural history of the region in his Hunting Trips of a Ranchman, Hunting Trips on the Prairie, and Hunting the Grisly. Ernest Thompson Seton, in his Mammals of Manitoba and later in his Life-histories of Northern Animals has included many important notes from the State. All these publications have been consulted. In C. Hart Merriam's Report of the Ornithologist for 1887, there is a summary of Bailey's (1888) field notes of the year, taken on a trip from Fargo to' Pembina, Devils Lake, the Turtle Mountains, and Fort Buford. In 1914 a brief preliminary report on the Mam mals of North Dakota, by the writer collaborating with W. B. Bell, then of the agricultural college, and Melvin A. Brannon, of the State university, was published as Circular No. 3 of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. This was largely in the nature of an appeal for additional information on the mam mals of the State. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from North American Fauna No; 16: Actual Date of Publication, October 28, 1899 All high mountains, particularly those that stand alone, are likely to throw light on the problems of geographic distribution and are worthy of careful study. Shasta, not only because Of its great altitude, but even more because of its intermediate position between the Sierra and the Cascades, promised an instructive lesson, and was therefore chosen as a base station for part of the field work of 1898.
