Book Description
Excerpt from North American Archives of Medical and Surgical Science, Vol. 1 Another variety of fever, is that in which symptoms of gastric disturbance are predominant. Under such circumstances, the disease falls with its principal force upon the stomach, and fre quently upon the upper part of the duodenum. When this latter organ is much a 'ected, there is, besides, in many cases, more Or less consecutive disturbance of the liver, giving the disease something of the character of bilious fever. When the disease affects the stomach chie y, it has been very properly denominated gastric fever, or by the proselytes of the Brons saian school, gastro-duodenitis. When to the other symptoms, are superadded such as denote a disturbance of the liver, the term gastro-duodeno-hepatitis has been employed, by the advo cates of the same doctrines, to designate the parts, implicated. This variety of fever not unfrequently presents itself under' a form of great intensity, an example of which is furnished by the yellow fever, which seems to fall with its principal force upon these three organs. Book Description
Excerpt from North American Archives of Medical and Surgical Science, 1835, Vol. 2 In order to thoroughly comprehend this position, let us inquire into the nature Of spasm. The Greeks gave the name o'm'adpwg to every kind of convulsion, and by modern nosologists convulsions are ranked amongst the spasmi. The term is now usually applied to involuntary contractions, especially of the voluntary muscles; and these, again, have been divided into tonic spasms, which con sist in permanent rigidity Of the muscles concerned, - Of which we have an example in common cr& and into clonic spasms, which consist in alternate contractions and relaxations, Of which we have an example in the convulsions of children. Book Description
Excerpt from The North American Medical and Surgical Journal, 1829, Vol. 8 Without entering into the merits of this case, I have, since that trial, deemed it of sufficient importance to endeavour, on my own account, (as maintaining the same opinion that was regarded as objectionable in the party concerned), to substantiate the position I had previously sustained in the publication alluded to - viz. That there is a direct communication between the parent and child; and proved, as I think, conclusively, by the direct and successful ex periments of several most ingenuous and most reputable anato mists; whilst the opposite opinion is sustained by negative experi ments alone, in the hands of others.
