Book Description
Various problems related to the nonlinear oscillations of mechanical and structural systems were investigated. They involved the following topics: (1) Resonances in weakly nonlinear systems subjected to multifrequency parametric and/or external excitation, with one case being a self-excited system; (2) Dynamic behavior of cracked bars and rotating shafts, for the purpose of detecting cracks; (3) Vibrations of cylindrical membranes, with applications to inflatable dams; (4) Vibrations and stability of structures whose support resistance changes as the structure is loaded: (5) Dynamic instability of laminated composite plates under in-plane harmonically-varying loads; (6) Application of vibration data to nondestructively predict buckling loads; (7) Nonlinear oscillations of slender cantilevered beams under harmonically-varying loads; and (8) Prediction of a large jump in deflection, such as snap-through instability, under harmonically-varying loads. The results improve our understanding of the dynamics of mechanical and structural systems, and will be useful in the prevention of excessively large motions and unstable behavior.

Book Description
"Nonlinear Oscillations in Mechanical Engineering" explores the effects of nonlinearities encountered in applications in that field. Since the nonlinearities are caused, first of all, by contacts between different mechanical parts, the main part of this book is devoted to oscillations in mechanical systems with discontinuities caused by dry friction and collisions. Another important source of nonlinearity which is covered is that caused by rotating unbalanced parts common in various machines as well as variable inertias occurring in all kinds of crank mechanisms. This book is written for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students, but it may be also helpful and interesting for both theoreticians and practitioners working in the area of mechanical engineering at universities, in research labs or institutes and especially in the R and D departments within industrial firms.

Book Description
In contrast to other books devoted to the averaging method and the method of integral manifolds, in the present book we study oscillation systems with many varying frequencies. In the process of evolution, systems of this type can pass from one resonance state into another. This fact considerably complicates the investigation of nonlinear oscillations. In the present monograph, a new approach based on exact uniform estimates of oscillation integrals is proposed. On the basis of this approach, numerous completely new results on the justification of the averaging method and its applications are obtained and the integral manifolds of resonance oscillation systems are studied. This book is intended for a wide circle of research workers, experts, and engineers interested in oscillation processes, as well as for students and post-graduate students specialized in ordinary differential equations.

Book Description
In this book the dynamics of the non-ideal oscillatory system, in which the excitation is influenced by the response of the oscillator, is presented. Linear and nonlinear oscillators with one or more degrees of freedom interacting with one or more energy sources are treated. This concerns for example oscillating systems excited by a deformed elastic connection, systems excited by an unbalanced rotating mass, systems of parametrically excited oscillator and an energy source, frictionally self-excited oscillator and an energy source, energy harvesting system, portal frame – non-ideal source system, non-ideal rotor system, planar mechanism – non-ideal source interaction. For the systems the regular and irregular motions are tested. The effect of self-synchronization, chaos and methods for suppressing chaos in non-ideal systems are considered. In the book various types of motion control are suggested. The most important property of the non-ideal system connected with the jump-like transition from a resonant state to a non-resonant one is discussed. The so called ‘Sommerfeld effect’, resonant unstable state and jumping of the system into a new stable state of motion above the resonant region is explained. A mathematical model of the system is solved analytically and numerically. Approximate analytical solving procedures are developed. Besides, simulation of the motion of the non-ideal system is presented. The obtained results are compared with those for the ideal case. A significant difference is evident. The book aims to present the established results and to expand the literature in non-ideal vibrating systems. A further intention of the book is to give predictions of the effects for a system where the interaction between an oscillator and the energy source exist. The book is targeted at engineers and technicians dealing with the problem of source-machine system, but is also written for PhD students and researchers interested in non-linear and non-ideal problems.

Book Description
Many dynamical systems are described by differential equations that can be separated into one part, containing linear terms with constant coefficients, and a second part, relatively small compared with the first, containing nonlinear terms. Such a system is said to be weakly nonlinear. The small terms rendering the system nonlinear are referred to as perturbations. A weakly nonlinear system is called quasi-linear and is governed by quasi-linear differential equations. We will be interested in systems that reduce to harmonic oscillators in the absence of perturbations. This book is devoted primarily to applied asymptotic methods in nonlinear oscillations which are associated with the names of N. M. Krylov, N. N. Bogoli ubov and Yu. A. Mitropolskii. The advantages of the present methods are their simplicity, especially for computing higher approximations, and their applicability to a large class of quasi-linear problems. In this book, we confine ourselves basi cally to the scheme proposed by Krylov, Bogoliubov as stated in the monographs [6,211. We use these methods, and also develop and improve them for solving new problems and new classes of nonlinear differential equations. Although these methods have many applications in Mechanics, Physics and Technique, we will illustrate them only with examples which clearly show their strength and which are themselves of great interest. A certain amount of more advanced material has also been included, making the book suitable for a senior elective or a beginning graduate course on nonlinear oscillations.

Book Description
One of the most important features of nonlinear systems with several degrees of freedom is the presence of internal resonances at certain relations between natural frequencies of different modes. This monograph is the first book devoted predominantly to internal resonances in different mechanical systems including those of practical importance. The main purpose is to consider the internal resonances from the general point of view and to elucidate their role in applied nonlinear dynamics by using an efficient approach based on introducing the complex representation of equations of motion (together with the multiple scale method). Considered here are autonomous and nonautonomous discrete two-degree-of-freedom systems, infinite chains of particles, and continuous systems, including circular rings and cylindrical shells. Specific attention is paid to the case of one-to-one internal resonance in systems with cubic nonlinearities. Steady-state and nonstationary regimes of motion, interaction of the internal and external resonances at forced oscillations, and bifurcations of steady-state modes and their stability are systematically studied./a
