Risk-Based Ship Design
Author: Apostolos Papanikolaou
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3540890424
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 379
Book Description
Risk-based ship design is a new scientific and engineering field of growing interest to researchers, engineers and professionals from various disciplines related to ship design, construction, operation and regulation. The main motivation to use risk-based approaches is twofold: implement a novel ship design which is considered safe but - for some formal, regulatory reason - cannot be approved today and/or rationally optimize an existing design with respect to safety, without compromising on efficiency and performance. It is a clear direction that all future technological and regulatory (International Maritime Organisation) developments regarding ship design and operation will go through risk-based procedures, which are known and well established in other industries (e.g. nuclear, aviation). The present book derives from the knowledge gained in the course of the project SAFEDOR (Design, Operation and Regulation for Safety), an Integrated Project under the 6th framework programme of the European Commission (IP 516278). The book aims to provide an understanding of the fundamentals and details of the integration of risk-based approaches into the ship design process. The book facilitates the transfer of knowledge from recent research work to the wider maritime community and advances scientific approaches dealing with risk-based design and ship safety.

ISBN: 0393076245
Category : Political Science

Book Description
"A superb book.…Mearsheimer has made a significant contribution to our understanding of the behavior of great powers."—Barry R. Posen, The National Interest The updated edition of this classic treatise on the behavior of great powers takes a penetrating look at the question likely to dominate international relations in the twenty-first century: Can China rise peacefully? In clear, eloquent prose, John Mearsheimer explains why the answer is no: a rising China will seek to dominate Asia, while the United States, determined to remain the world's sole regional hegemon, will go to great lengths to prevent that from happening. The charms, as well as the subtle hazards, of the terms ‘conservation, preservation, and ecology’ need to be crystallized so that the public and their decision-makers practice this complex art with clearer conception and perception than is apparent in recent bitter confrontations." —From the Foreword to the Fourth Edition by Abel Wolman What’s New in This Edition: New entries on environmental and occupational toxicology, geoengineering, and lead abatement Twenty-five significantly updated entries, including expanded discussion of water supplies and waste water treatment, biomass and renewable energy, and international public health issues An expanded list of acronyms and abbreviations Encyclopedia of Environmental Science and Engineering, Sixth Edition is still the most comprehensive, authoritative reference available in the field. This monumental two-volume encyclopedia now includes entries on topics ranging from acid rain, air pollution, and community health to environmental law, instrumentation, modeling, alternative energy, radioactive waste, and water treatment. The broad coverage includes highly specialized topics as well as those that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, reflecting the interdisciplinary skills and knowledge required by environmental researchers and engineers. Featuring expert contributors representing industry, academia, and government agencies, the encyclopedia presents fundamental concepts and applications in environmental science and engineering. The entries are supported by extensive figures, photographs, tables, and equations. This sixth edition includes new material on water supplies and wastewater treatment, biomass and renewable energy, and international public health issues. New entries cover environmental and occupational toxicology, geoengineering, and lead abatement. Sustaining Marine Fisheries
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309055261
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 189
Book Description
Fluctuations and declines in marine fish populations have caused growing concern among marine scientists, fisheries managers, commercial and recreational fishers, and the public. Sustaining Marine Fisheries explores the nature of marine ecosystems and the complex interacting factors that shape their productivity. The book documents the condition of marine fisheries today, highlighting species and geographic areas that are under particular stress. Challenges to achieving sustainability are discussed, and shortcomings of existing fisheries management and regulation are examined. The volume calls for fisheries management to adopt a broader ecosystem perspective that encompasses all relevant environmental and human influences. Sustaining Marine Fisheries offers new approaches to building workable fisheries management institutions, improving scientific data, and developing management tools. The book recommends ways to change current practices that encourage overexploitation of fish resources. It will be of special interest to marine policymakers and ecologists, fisheries regulators and managers, fisheries scientists and marine ecologists, fishers, and concerned individuals.

Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 110
Book Description
How can you tell if the materials and components you are specifyinghave a low environmental impact? A full life-cycle assessment is acomplex, time-consuming and expensive process; the environmentalratings summarised in this Guide provide a quick and easy way fordesigners and specifiers to assess their options. The relative environmental performance of over 250 materials andcomponents have been assessed in this guide, using carefullyresearched, quantitative data derived from the BRE EnvironmentalDatabase. A wide range of alternative specifications are providedfor: · walls · floor systems · floor finishes · roofs · windows · doors · ceilings · paints · insulation · landscaping. The performance of each specification is measured against arange of environmental impacts including: · climate change · toxicity · fossil fuel and ozone depletion · levels of emissions and pollutants · mineral and water extraction. Environmental performance is indicated by a simple to use A-B-Crating system. To further aid specifiers, guidance on capitalcoasts, typical replacement intervals and information on recyclingis also provided for each material and component. An important part of BREEAM, the BRE's widely accepted scheme toimprove the environmental performance of buildings, The GreenGuide to Specification is an essential tool for architects, surveyors, building managers and property owners seeking to reducethe environmental impacts of building materials through informedchoice.
