Book Description
Excerpt from New York State Colleges of Agriculture and Home Economics The Farm Bureau grew out of the common need of farmers for organization for educational and social purposes. The Farm Bureau Exchange has grown out of the equally common need of farmers for organization for business purposes. While the purposes of the two organizations are different, the ends sought are not entirely dissimilar, one of the most important objects of one being to reduce the cost of production of products on the farm and of the other to reduce the cost of distribution of products to and from the farm. The Farm Bureau, through its branch centers located in the different parts of a county, has become a great ferum for the discussion of the technical problems of production and of marketing and, at the same time, it has become an agency for the general improvement of/ conditions in the country. The Farm Bureau Exchange, on the other hand, assumes certain business responsibilities of buying better and cheaper farm supplies and of selling certain of the products of its members to better advantage than the grower can acting in his individual capacity. Book Description
Excerpt from New York State Colleges of Agriculture and Home Economics at Cornell University The prospective bee-keeper will be well advised to make haste slowly: Beginning with not more than a couple of stocks, he should increase the number as he acquires experience and becomes more capable of dealing with a larger apiary. See Leaflet No. 334 (how to Increase Colonies of Bees) included in this volume. Appliances. - The appliances should be as simple as pos sible, and only those absolutely necessary should be purchased. These consist of a complete hive, containing supers (section racks, or shallow comb boxes), a queen excluder, quilts, ten frames with a division board in the brood chamber, comb foundation for the brood frames and also for the supers, a veil, and a smoker or carbolic cloth for subduing the bees. If the shallow combs are to be used for procuring surplus honey, a centrifugal honey extractor will also be needed, but this will not be required if comb honey is worked for exclusively. A scraper for cleaning floor boards, frame tops, &c., an uncap ping knife for use when extracting (a carving knife will serve this purpose), and a. Bee escape fitted into a board for clearing the bees out of the supers, will also be required. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-Fifth Annual Report of the New York State College of Agriculture at Cornell University and the Agricultural Experiment Station Established Under the Direction of Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y., 1912, Vol. 1: Transmitted to the Legislature January 15, 1913 The College is now publishing semi-monthly Lessons in the Reading Courses, a monthly Rural School Leaflet, bulletins of the Experiment Station, and circulars of the Experiment Station. In the last year we also established a new publication known as the Announcer of the College of Agriculture. This is published monthly, and contains brief announcements or statements of the work that the College is doing. This publication has been of more service to the work than any other single innovation that has been made for some time. It enables us to keep the people informed of the activities of the institution that they support, and it is the readiest and most economical means of answering many routine questions. Some of the issues are devoted chiefly to particular topics. One issue, for example, is given to exposition of the experiment station work; another to the extension work; another to the summer school work; others to the new plans for home economics and poultry buildings; and the like. Brief advance abstracts are given of the various publications. The first issue of the Announcer was published in October, 191 I. It has already become an established factor in the work of the institution. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
The Encyclopedia of New York State is one of the most complete works on the Empire State to be published in a half-century. In nearly 2,000 pages and 4,000 signed entries, this single volume captures the impressive complexity of New York State as a historic crossroads of people and ideas, as a cradle of abolitionism and feminism, and as an apex of modern urban, suburban, and rural life. The Encyclopedia is packed with fascinating details from fields ranging from sociology and geography to history. Did you know that Manhattan's Lower East Side was once the most populated neighborhood in the world, but Hamilton County in the Adirondacks is the least densely populated county east of the Mississippi; New York is the only state to border both the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean; the Erie Canal opened New York City to rich farmland upstate . . . and to the west. Entries by experts chronicle New York's varied areas, politics, and persuasions with a cornucopia of subjects from environmentalism to higher education to railroads, weaving the state's diverse regions and peoples into one idea of New York State. Lavishly illustrated with 500 photographs and figures, 120 maps, and 140 tables, the Encyclopedia is key to understanding the state's past, present, and future. It is a crucial reference for students, teachers, historians, and business people, for New Yorkers of all persuasions, and for anyone interested in finding out more about New York State.
