Book Description
Crop losses by pests (insects, diseases and weeds) are as old as plant themselves but as agriculture are intensified and cropping patterns including the cultivation of high yielding varieties and hybrids are changing over time the impact of the pests becoming increasingly important. Approximately less than 1000 insect species (roughly 600-800 species), 1500 -2000 plant species, numerous fungal, bacterial and nematode species as well as viruses are considered serious pests in agriculture. If these pests were not properly controlled, crop yields and their quality would drop, considerably. In addition production costs as well as food and fiber prices are increased. The current book is going to put Plant Protection approaches in perspective.

Book Description
This book presents various outcomes of recent studies and advancements regarding plant protection. Crop losses due to pests, including insects, diseases and weeds, have been prevalent for a long time. However, with the intensification of agriculture and dynamic changes in cropping patterns including the cultivation of high yielding varieties and hybrids; over time, the role played by pesticides has become extremely significant. Nearly a thousand insect species (between 600 to 800), 1500 to 2000 plant species, several fungal, nematode and bacterial species as well as viruses are regarded as pests of specific concern in the field of agriculture. For the maintenance of the quality of crop yields, these pests need to be appropriately controlled. Also, these pests can cause an increase in the production costs as well as prices of food and fiber. Therefore, this book presents current approaches in plant production from diverse perspectives.

Book Description
This book begins with an account of the early history of Phytophthora research and the tumultuous events setting the genus in motion. In keeping with its controversial inception, the chapter on taxonomy and phylogeny makes a compelling case that our current notion of Phytophthora as a genus is illusory. This chapter sets the stage for the importance of molecular tools on these enigmatic pathogens. The following chapters discuss species identification, population-level investigation, interspecific hybrids and the impact of diverse Phytophthora species on crops, forests, nurseries, greenhouses and natural areas worldwide.

Book Description
With 160+ countries and islands, the tropical belt is the geographical region centered on the equator and limited by the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Tropical agricultural production is mostly for local consumption but cash crops are also present. Tropical agriculture is characterized by a significant lack of capital in research and agricultural systems and by a high prevalence of insect pests and diseases. Phytoplasma diseases are associated by bacteria-like pathogens living in plant sap and spread by sap-feeding insects. They are emerging diseases and are difficult to control, mostly because their epidemiology is not known. This book will focus on detection and prevention of phytoplasma diseases in field and horticultural crops grown in the tropical belt. The book will review current prevention methods used in small and large-scale farms, and present research results aiming at developing sustainable management of phytoplasma diseases in the tropics.
