Book Description
Excerpt from New Grammar School Arithmetic, Vol. 1 Tm; New Grammar School Arithmetic forms with the New Primary Arithmetic a complete course in elementary school mathematics. Each of the first four chapters of the New Grammar School Arithmetic provides for a half year, beginning with advanced matter, which is followed by a review and an extension of the topics of the preceding grades. Each of the next two chapters (v and VI) contains arithmetic work for a year, which should be supplemented by portions of the algebraic and geometrical material of Chapters VII and VIII. It is recommended that at least a portion of the work in equations of Chapter VII should precede the study of Chapter V. Among the special features of the New Grammar School Arithmetic are the number and the variety of the problems; the systematic reviews, which cover oral and written drill work even in the fundamental operations; the attention paid to short, direct, business methods of computation; and the spiral handling of the various topics. Book Description
Excerpt from Essentials of Arithmetic: Grammar School Book This work furnishes the material for a thorough study of the great essentials of arithmetic in the last four years of the elementary school. In general, in the schools of this country the work of Grade V consists of a review of the fundamental operations and a thorough study of the fractions and denominate numbers used in practical life. The central feature, in substantially all schools, is common fractions. The needs of this grade are met in Chapters I-III. In Grade VI the central feature is usually decimal fractions, the other topics being practical measurements and an introduction to percentage. These are the topics discussed in Chapters IV-VI. Percentage and its applications is taken up more thoroughly in Chapter IX, and the few schools which do not care to devote any time to percentage in Grade VI may omit Chapter VI and the few examples requiring percentage in Chapters VII and VIII. In general, the work of Grade VII is a thorough study of per centage and its applications, while Grade VIII considers arithmetic from the standpoint of the pupil's relation to the commercial, civic, and industrial world which he is about to enter. These two great features have been emphasized in the general plan of this book. Having always advocated the elimination of obsolete matter from mathematics, and having repeatedly urged the reduction of the number of separate topics and the avoidance of subjects in which the chlld has no immediate or remote interest, the authors take pleasure in presenting a series of books containing only those essentials of arithmetic which are needed in common life. More complete courses are offered in other books, but the teacher who sympathizes with the modern trend in education will find in this series all of arith metic that the pupil must thoroughly know. Book Description
Excerpt from Rational Grammar School Arithmetic The present book is an outgrowth of the notion that arithmetic as a science of pure number, and arithmetic as a school science, must be treated from two essentially different stand points. Viewed as a finished mental product, arithmetic is an abstract science, taking its bearings solely from the needs of the subject; but viewed as a school subject, arithmetic should be an abstracted science, taking its bearings mainly from the needs of the learner. The former calls only for logical treatment, while the latter calls for psychological treatment as well. In other words, to be of high educational value the school science of arithmetic must take into full account the particular stage of the pupil's development. The abstract stage must be approached by steps which begin with the learner, rise with his unfolding powers, and end leaving him in possession of the outlines of the science of arithmetic. To break vital contact with the learner at any stage of the unfolding process is fatal. A controlling principle in the development of the various topics of this book is that any phase of arithmetical work, to be of value, must make an appeal to the life of the pupil. The course covers five or six years of the grammar school life of the pupil, say from eight to fifteen years of age. It is divided into three books, each book being again divided into two parts, with about 800 problems in each part. Book I. Is for pupils of from 8 to 11 years of age; Book II. Book Description
Excerpt from Grammar School Arithmetic, Vol. 2: Extending Over the Course of Graded Grammar School Work This book has been prepared for the pupils of our common schools with two special objects in view: to train the mind of the child to acquire facility and accuracy in the fundamental use of number, in both oral and written work, in an orderly and natural way; and to prepare him for the business of daily life. The author has also had in view the needs of the many children who are compelled to leave school at an early age and who have no time to spend in learning the definitions and theories of arithmetic, but who need a great deal of practice in the essentials of the subject. The problems have been constructed with special reference to utility and business needs, and they are written in definite arithmetical language within the comprehension of the child. An important feature is the arrangement of the lessons, each of which consists of fifteen concrete problems five mental and ten written. The five mental problems are similar in appearance and process of solution to the ten written problems which follow, and are to be used as an introductory lesson. Teachers will at once note the peculiar advantage of a book in which mental and written work are combined in the same lesson. It furnishes matter which hitherto they have been obliged to find elsewhere or entirely neglect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
