Book Description
Excerpt from New Graded Lessons in Arithmetic, Vol. 3 Several lessons are given that bear upon the work in manual training, thus connecting that important branch with the regular work of the schoolroom. For the same reason a few lessons are given in home furnishing and in domestic economy. The second section is intended for use in the last year of the grammar school, but may be used in those high schools where arithmetic is reviewed. For this reason it does not follow the plan of the preceding sections of the series. With the exception Of the topics fully presented in the first part it is a brief but complete arithmetic presented topically. Book Description
Excerpt from New Graded Lessons in Arithmetic, Vol. 7 This seventh book of the series follows the same general plan as the preceding books. The first few pages are devoted to a systematic review of the work of the preceding grade. Then the new work for the year is taken up and that is followed by a general summary. This arrangement is shown in the table of contents. In the advanced work of the grade especial emphasis is given to the applications of percentage, including bank discount, commercial discount, insurance, commission, taxes, etc. Great care has been taken to present these topics in a clear and simple manner so that the pupils may be able to understand them, without the help of the teacher. The aim has been to present a large variety of reasonable problems that appeal to the pupils as coming Within the range of their experiences. Several lessons are given that bear especially upon the work in manual training, thus connecting that important branch with the regular work of the schoolroom. For the same reason a few lessons are given in home furnishing and in domestic economy. The oral work, because of its importance, is emphasized here as it has been in the earlier books of the series. The work in algebra has been extended and the pupils are introduced for the first time to the simplest principles of constructive geometry. Book Description
Excerpt from Graded Lessons in Arithmetic: Grade III 1. These lessons have been prepared in the belief that it is a mistake to assume that one topic is to be finished before another is begun. The elements of many topics are here given in lower grades in explanations, illustrations, and examples easily understood by the younger pupils; and then the work in each topic is made more and more difficult through the various grades until it is finished. These examples have stood the test of the school-room, and in no case have they been found too difficult. 2. The arrangement of the topics is such that pupils in passing into a new grade find but few new topics, and many pupils are prepared for promotion from grade to grade at various times during the year, and are not obliged to wait for the annual promotions. 3. Such practical subjects as Percentage and Interest are introduced in the lower grades, where many pupils are found who are obliged to leave school before they reach the more advanced grades. 4. Clear conceptions of geometric forms and mensuration are introduced at an early period, that principles thus developed may be applied to many practical problems.
