Corpus-based translation studies has become a major paradigm and research methodology and has investigated a wide variety of topics in the last two decades. The contributions to this volume add to the range of corpus-based studies by providing examples of some less explored applications of corpus analysis methods to translation research. They show that the area keeps evolving as it constantly opens up to different frameworks and approaches, from appraisal theory to process-oriented analysis, and encompasses multiple translation settings, including (indirect) literary translation, machine (assisted)-translation and the practical work of professional legal translators. This volume provides a comprehensive introduction to the Translation Process Research Database (TPR-DB), which was compiled by the Centre for Research and Innovation in Translation and Technologies (CRITT). The TPR-DB is a unique resource featuring more than 500 hours of recorded translation process data, augmented with over 200 different rich annotations. Twelve chapters describe the diverse research directions this data can support, including the computational, statistical and psycholinguistic modeling of human translation processes. In the first chapters of this book, the reader is introduced to the CRITT TPR-DB. This is followed by two main parts, the first of which focuses on usability issues and details of implementing interactive machine translation. It also discusses the use of external resources and translator-information interaction. The second part addresses the cognitive and statistical modeling of human translation processes, including co-activation at the lexical, syntactic and discourse levels, translation literality, and various annotation schemata for the data.

This book is a result of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on New Directions for Intelligent Tutoring Systems, held in Sintra, Portugal, October 6-10, 1990. The main idea behind the workshop was to bring together scientists with different concerns about Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) in order to discuss the positive and negative aspects of the current architecture paradigm (expert module, student module, instructional module, and interface module) and, eventually, propose some modifications or radical changes to it. This was a consequence of the increasing malaise felt currently by researchers in the area of artificial intelligence and education and in particular by those concerned with ITS. One symptom of this state of affairs is the fact that people have started talking about Intelligent Learning Environ ments (lLE) instead of ITS. To understand the reasons for this situation we promoted the discussion of questions like: - To what extent do we need the technology of expert systems in ITS? Which other relevant AI techniques and methodologies are urgently needed? - Is ITS a tool for knowledge communication or is it rather a belief system? - How can the research already done on interactions among agents be utilized? - Is it possible to find a fonnal theory to describe and solve the current problems with ITS? The book contains the revised versions of the papers presented at the workshop. The new texts reflect the discussions that took place at the meeting.
