Book Description
&Quot; This book shows how wavelets can be used to enhance computational intelligence for chaotic and complex pattern recognition problems. By integrating wavelets with other soft computing techniques such as neurocomputing and fuzzy logic, complicated and noisy pattern recognition problems can be solved effectively. The book focuses on applications in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) where a number of very complicated pattern recognition problems have eluded researchers over the past few decades.". "Wavelets in Intelligent Transportation Systems is an invaluable resource for computational intelligence researchers and transportation engineers involved in the application of advanced computational techniques for ITS."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
Automatic freeway incident detection is an important component of advanced transportation management systems (ATMS) that provides information for emergency relief and traffic control and management purposes. In this research, a multi-paradigm intelligent system approach and several innovative algorithms were developed for solution of the freeway traffic incident detection problem employing advanced signal processing, pattern recognition, and classification techniques. The methodology effectively integrates fuzzy, wavelet, and neural computing techniques to improve reliability and robustness.

Book Description
This book constitutes the proceedings of the second International Workshop on Advanced Computational Intelligence (IWACI 2009), with a sequel of IWACI 2008 successfully held in Macao, China. IWACI 2009 provided a high-level international forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present state-of-the-art research in computational intelligence and related fields. Over the past decades, computational intelligence community has witnessed t- mendous efforts and developments in all aspects of theoretical foundations, archit- tures and network organizations, modelling and simulation, empirical study, as well as a wide range of applications across different domains. IWACI 2009 provided a great platform for the community to share their latest research results, discuss critical future research directions, stimulate innovative research ideas, as well as facilitate inter- tional multidisciplinary collaborations. IWACI 2009 received 146 submissions from about 373 authors in 26 countries and regions (Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Chile, Hong Kong, India, Islamic Republic of Iran, Japan, Jordan, Macao, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, USA, Ve- zuela, Vietnam, and Yemen) across six continents (Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa, and Oceania). Based on the rigorous peer reviews by the Program Committee members, 52 high-quality papers were selected for publication in this book, with an acceptance rate of 36.3%. These papers cover major topics of the theoretical research, empirical study, and applications of computational intelligence.

Book Description
Earthquakes, bridge collapses, and other natural disasters have dominated news coverage in the last few years. Aging infrastructure needs to be rehabilitated and new infrastructure needs to be designed differently. Presenting a highly innovative, modern approach verging on the futuristic, Wavelet-Based Vibration Control of Smart Buildings and Bridges discusses a new generation of building and bridge structures that not only withstands [generation is singular] the destructive effects of nature but is also impact and explosion resistant. Based on the groundbreaking work of Hojit Adeli, the book introduces the new mathematical concept of wavelets into the field of structural vibration control. It presents a new control algorithm for robust control of smart civil structures subjected to destructive environmental forces, such as earthquakes and wind. It then discusses a new hybrid control system, the hybrid tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) system. The new hybrid control system, which combines passive and semi-active control systems, is intended to achieve increased reliability and maximum operability of the control system during power failure and to eliminate the need for a larger power requirement. The great majority of papers published in this area of active structural vibration control deal with small or academic problems. The models in this book have been tested and their effectiveness evaluated extensively on small problems for the sake of comparison with other methods and results reported in the literature. The authors go one step further and apply them to realistic and large building and bridge structures to demonstrate the applicability of the new smart technology to large real-world civil structures. Balancing coverage between theory and application, the book demonstrates the benefits of the new smart technology in the design of structures that are safer and more sustainable.
