Book Description
This paper presents the research analysis of visible/near infrared spectroscopy in identification of decay in mountain pine beetle affected lumber. The research premise was based upon the concept that using visible/near infrared spectroscopy would aid in improving more immediate decay detection in lumber. Because of the increasing amounts of decay, specifically sap-rot, and the increase of lumber production within the planer mills, soley relying on visible detection of the rot is not feasible. Although automated detection systems do use colour cameras, this research analysis was to provide information on whether the process could be improved upon in decay detection for the lumber graders.

Fungal Strategies of Wood Decay in Trees
Author: Francis W.M.R. Schwarze
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642573029
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 195
Book Description
Wood-destroying fungi play an important role in nature, because they are the only forms of life capable of reducing wood to its initial constituents. However, they can also be dangerous for people and property, as they can impair the stability and fracture-safety of trees. This book gives detailed information, based on new and original scientfic findings, on the examination and effects of the most important species of fungi associated with failure of infected urban trees. In addition, new ways are presented for predicting the advance of decay in the living tree. The subject is illustrated and made easily accessible by numerous colored photos of fungus fruit bodies, defect symptoms, and macroscopic and microscopic pictures of wood decay. A detailed introduction to the fundamentals of wood pathology provides a way into the subjects of applied mycology and tree care for readers without previous special knowledge. Francis W.M.R. Schwarze, National Diploma of Arboriculture at Merrist Wood College, UK (1991), Master of Science in Pure, Applied Plant and Fungal Taxonomy, University of Reading, UK (1992), doctorate at Freiburg University (1995), since 1996 assistant at the Institute for Forest Botany and Tree Physiology at Freiburg University, concentrating on research into wood-destroying fungi and host-fungus interactions. Julia Engels, Diploma Forester at Freiburg University (1995), doctorate on root fungi at Freiburg University (1998). Since 1998 active in tree care and mycology in Luxembourg. Claus Mattheck, born 1947, doctorate in theoretical physics (1973), qualified as lecturer on damage studies at Karlsruhe University (1985), and now teaches there as Professor. Since 1991 he has been an officially appointed and attested expert on tree mechanics and fracture behaviour. Has been awarded numerous prizes for research and publication. Head of the Biomechanics Department at the Karlsruhe Research Centre.

Development of a Portable Spectroscopic Sensor to Measure Wood and Fibre Properties in Standing Mountain Pine Beetle-attacked Trees and Decked Logs
Author: Esther Hsieh
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 42
Book Description
The mountain pine beetle infestation in British Columbia has resulted in a wood mixture that heavily favours attacked lodgepole pine trees. While visual indicators can be used to estimate the age of a tree or tree stand since attack, it is not a reliable predictor of the wood and fibre quality and therefore the true log value. Research was initiated to develop models using vis-NIR spectroscopy on a portable analyzer to measure these important variables rapidly for field and laboratory applications. This report describes the development of a unique, fast-scanning and field-portable tool to quantify parameters of relevance for mountain pine beetle infested lodgepole pine. Three calibration models to simultaneously predict moisture, density, blue stain and decay were developed for three different applications: wood core measurements in the laboratory, field measurements on standing trees, and decked log measurements.

Forest and Rangeland Soils of the United States Under Changing Conditions
Author: Richard V. Pouyat
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030452166
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 306
Book Description
This open access book synthesizes leading-edge science and management information about forest and rangeland soils of the United States. It offers ways to better understand changing conditions and their impacts on soils, and explores directions that positively affect the future of forest and rangeland soil health. This book outlines soil processes and identifies the research needed to manage forest and rangeland soils in the United States. Chapters give an overview of the state of forest and rangeland soils research in the Nation, including multi-decadal programs (chapter 1), then summarizes various human-caused and natural impacts and their effects on soil carbon, hydrology, biogeochemistry, and biological diversity (chapters 2–5). Other chapters look at the effects of changing conditions on forest soils in wetland and urban settings (chapters 6–7). Impacts include: climate change, severe wildfires, invasive species, pests and diseases, pollution, and land use change. Chapter 8 considers approaches to maintaining or regaining forest and rangeland soil health in the face of these varied impacts. Mapping, monitoring, and data sharing are discussed in chapter 9 as ways to leverage scientific and human resources to address soil health at scales from the landscape to the individual parcel (monitoring networks, data sharing Web sites, and educational soils-centered programs are tabulated in appendix B). Chapter 10 highlights opportunities for deepening our understanding of soils and for sustaining long-term ecosystem health and appendix C summarizes research needs. Nine regional summaries (appendix A) offer a more detailed look at forest and rangeland soils in the United States and its Affiliates.

Insects and Diseases of Mediterranean Forest Systems
Author: Timothy D. Paine
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319247441
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 888
Book Description
Insect and disease issues are often specific to the Mediterranean forest systems rather than shared with the temperate forests. In addition to the specific native insects and diseases, the forests are subject to the invasion of exotic species. The forests are also at risk from high degrees of human activity, including changing patterns of forest fires, land management activities, intensive plantation forestry using introduced timber species from other Mediterranean climate zones, and atmospheric deposition. Combined with elements of global climate change that may disproportionately affect Mediterranean climate systems, this creates a number of significant management issues that are unique to the Mediterranean forests. It is our goal that the information contained in this volume will contribute to understanding the unique aspects of Mediterranean forest systems and to protecting these critical resources.
