Book Description
This book analyses the nearly 30 years of India–ASEAN relations from a contemporary perspective, identifies the reasons for India’s vibrant and significant relation with ASEAN and examines the cultural, economic, political and strategic linkages between India and ASEAN. The book projects the future of India–ASEAN relations in the face of the changing Indo-Pacific geopolitics and explores potential policies which could enhance the connection between India and Southeast Asian countries. Arguing that ASEAN is of primary importance to India, the book suggests that any successful outing in the Indo-Pacific would need a strong partnership with India. The book demonstrates how external powers influence ASEAN, with many of them supporting the centrality of ASEAN and its regional architecture in the broader Indo-Pacific. Chapters by experts in their fields present thematically specific analyses of political, defence, maritime and cultural aspects as well as the position of Northeast India in the India–ASEAN relations and assess the success and challenges of India’s ties with ASEAN in the context of the Look East and the Act East Policies. A reassessment of ASEAN–India relations past and present, this book will be of interest to academics and policy makers working in the field of International Relations, Asian Politics and South Asian Politics, in particular India’s Foreign Policy and Southeast Asian Politics.

Book Description
India, especially coastal India, has a long history of shipbuilding and navigation dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Indian shipwrights and the labour force associated with various aspects of shipbuilding excelled in naval architecture. Their native wisdom was adopted by the Europeans engaged in shipbuilding in coastal India. Similarly some of the techniques of navigation followed by Indians were emulated by the European mariners. A comprehensive peep into the science of naval architecture and navigation is attempted in this work making a comparative study of Indian and Portuguese architecture and navigation. The volume discusses the importance of the timber grown in the monsoon-fed forests of the Malabar coast and its appreciation by the Portuguese shipwrights and theoreticians of naval architecture. The work shows that increase of the tonnage of ocean-going vessels and the appearance of hostile mariners from other quarters of Western Europe compelled the Portuguese to adopt enhanced technology in naval architecture and navigation. The fact that the use of canons for defence against intruders made the Portuguese vessels stronger than the Indian ships which, for centuries, were accustomed to considerably peaceful navigation is also brought out in this much anticipated volume.

This compilation shall help in enlightening and enriching companions on our intellectual journey through the heart and soul of Indian society. In India, the terms rural, urban, and peri-urban are used to describe different types of settlements. Rural areas are sparsely populated areas located outside towns and cities. They are characterized by open swathes of land with few homes or other buildings. The population density in rural areas is very low. Urban areas are densely populated areas that include cities and towns. They have a high population density and are characterized by a large number of buildings, infrastructure, and services. Peri-urban areas are located on the outskirts of cities and towns. They are characterized by a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial land uses. Peri-urban areas have a lower population density than urban areas but higher than rural areas. As a nation in constant evolution, India's urban centers are rapidly expanding, while its rural heartlands remain rooted in age-old traditions. Peri-urban regions act as vital connectors between these two worlds. In this book, we embark on a journey through the bustling streets of metropolises, the tranquil simplicity of villages, and the transitional zones that bridge these realms. Analysing the economic structures in urban, peri urban, and rural India, discussing key industries, employment and income patterns, and economic disparities and related issues between these regions is the main purpose of this compilation. The other purpose of the book is to explore the environmental challenges faced by different regions, such as pollution in urban areas, agricultural practices in rural areas, and the impact of development on suburban landscapes along with health care, education infrastructures, and other essential services and challenges faced by diverse populations. The book also discusses the potential future scenarios for urban, peri-urban, and rural India, considering factors like technological advancements, demographic shifts, and global influences. Ultimately, the purpose of the book may be a combination of these elements, aiming to provide a comprehensive and anuanced exploration of the varied landscapes and communities within India.
