The aim of the writer has been to describe the facts and phenomena of Nature as they have appeared to present themselves to his own observation. They are life-pictures rather than compilations. So far as systematic arrangement is concerned, there has certainly been an effort to treat each subject taken up in such a way as to lay at least a stepping-stone on the path to a more serious contemplation of the sciences of the text-book and the laboratory, but the primary intention of the author has been rather to awaken or to stimulate a love for Nature in the minds of some who may not as yet have suspected what wondrous and ever-varying beauty lies everywhere about us in ditch and pond, in rock and stone, in river and sea, on earth and in the skies. Among the beings which occupy the border-land be tween the animal and vegetable kingdoms, the sponges have of late years started into prominence. Relegated at first to the vegetable, but now conclusively proved to belong to the animal kingdom, the sponges are full of interest to the student of zoology. With the sponge of commerce we are all familiar enough, and it is scarcely necessary to state that it con Sists of the horny Skeleton alone, the whole of the organic matter having been removed. This organic matter is apparently nothing but a mere wash or film of gelatinous substance covering every filament of the Skeleton but when carefully examined it presents a most remarkable mixture of simplicity and complica tion. Without entering into the purely scientific details Of sponge-structure, I will endeavour to lay open some of the wonders which are hidden in one of the lowest forms of animal life. Excerpt from A Naturalist's Rambles About Home "When I happen out for a stroll, the difficulty that besets me is not what to seek - for to ramble without an object is an abomination - but what to choose of the endless variety of objects worthy of attention. I do not like to determine this after I have started, but prefer saying to myself, "I will watch the birds to-day," or, "I will hunt up the meadow-mice." To do this, at once gives an additional interest to a contemplated ramble; and, in all my experience, I have never yet failed to find some trace, at least, of that object to observe which I took the walk. Avoid the highways when you take a walk. Even if well shaded, they are abandoned now to the pestiferous English sparrows; and if you are really intent on a good tramp of a few miles, do not turn aside for a stretch of swamp. If you have any fear of wet feet, be properly shod before starting. It too often happens that the sights best worth seeing come to you when in a bit of wet meadow.
