Book Description
Excerpt from The Treatment of Nature in English Poetry: Between Pope and Wordsworth 'shadowed and prepared for as evidently as was Wordsworth. When at the end of such a period of preparation the great poet or artist comes, he is great by virtue of his power to penetrate beneath literary conventions and to give final literary form to the half articulate thoughts and feelings out of which the thoughts and feelings of his own epoch grow. He has his natural place in the development. The significance of his work rests in the fact that while it directs the future it also sums up the past. Book Description
Excerpt from The Nature Lovers' Treasury Many collections of Nature poetry have been made; among them two recent compilations by men eminently fitted to speak with authority. These volumes, edited by Bliss Carman and John Burroughs, are notable because they are selected from two different standpoints, that of a poet and that of a naturalist. There is a third point of view, which is that of the Lover of Nature who is neither poet nor naturalist, but who has, nevertheless. A keen appreciation of all the life giving forces which are to be found in Nature's realms. As the demands of civilization increase, there comes an urgent call to men who have grown weary in the struggle and turmoil of cities to seek refreshment and healing amid Nature's solitudes. It is a repetition of the old myth of Hercules and Antaeus. Whenever men are well-nigh worsted in life's conflict, let them but be brought in contact with mother earth and they shall go forth strengthened and heartened. Book Description
Excerpt from The Naturalist's Poetical Companion: With Notes The Study of Natural History is within the reach of every one; and he who is engaged in it is presented at every step in his progress, with something capable of awakening pleasing emotions. The whole earth is to him a vast Museum, in which are crowded beautiful and sublime objects, animate and inanimate, in an almost endless variety, all combining to amuse the understanding and gladden the heart. Nor is the study less useful than delightful. Common and indispensable as are on our tables, the wheaten loaf, the potatoe, and other vegetable substances, they were all once in appearance, only weeds among weeds; and it is by a discriminating attention to plants, that they have been brought to occupy so important a place in our domestic economy. From a similar examination of the productions of the earth, the physician has extracted from their secret channels those correcting juices, which remove or alleviate the diseases incident to the human body, restoring it to the freshness and vigour of health. Book Description
Excerpt from The Feeling for Nature in English Pastoral Poetry If the word pastoral be a generic term denoting a literary mode and not a Special literary form, its comprehensive possibilities for an appreciation of nature are at once evident, and to inquire how far the poets have succeeded in using their opportunity, is our present task. It is upon the results of this inquiry that our definition of the pastoral must be based, rather than upon any preconceived theory as to what they ought to have done.
