Book Description
Birthdays are meant to be memorable in a positive way, right? Unfortunately, not everyone has fond childhood memories of their birthdays. And, sadly, this story is no exception. Natasha, on the other hand, learns an important lesson from the experience, which hopefully inspires you to REMEMBER to be "present" for your own family on a daily basis.Synopsis:Today is my 13th birthday! But will my family remember?Natasha, 13, awakens on December 22, her birthday. As she pulls her hair in a ponytail, she daydreams about celebrating becoming a teenager. However, as the day progresses, no one remembers or appears to care because everyone is preoccupied with Christmas shopping. Natasha becomes distraught. Trying to keep her cool, she gives her family hints on why today is a special day. Sadly, no one guesses correctly, leaving her flustered. It isn't until she says, "Someone in this room just turned a year older," that they guess correctly. But it's too late; she's devastated and withdraws to her room to cry before falling asleep.... She wakes up and walks into the living room, but no one is there. Disappointed, she starts to head back to her room, and just then, everyone jumps out to surprise her. Her family, friends, and a few neighbors join her for hours of birthday fun.... But then she wakes up in bed and realizes she was only dreaming about the party. The story then jumps 20 years into the future. She recalls her tragic birthday as the night she learned a valuable lesson and resolved to make an effort every day to make her own family feel loved and appreciated.I wrote this story in high school but have since made significant changes, particularly to the ending. I hope that after reading it, you will be inspired to be present for your own family every day and express your love for them.

Book Description
The New York Times bestselling definitive biography of Natalie Wood, Natasha is the haunting story of a vulnerable and talented actress whom many of us felt we knew. We watched her mature on the movie screen before our eyes—in Miracle on 34th Street, Rebel Without a Cause, West Side Story, Splendor in the Grass, and on and on. She has been hailed—along with Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor—as one of the top three female movie stars in the history of film, making her a legend in her own lifetime and beyond. But the story of what Natalie endured, of what her life was like when the doors of the soundstages closed, has long been obscured. Natasha is based on years of exhaustive research into Natalie's turbulent life and mysterious drowning. Author Suzanne Finstad conducted nearly four hundred interviews with Natalie's family, close friends, legendary costars, lovers, film crews, and virtually everyone connected with the investigation of her strange death. Through these firsthand accounts from many who have never spoken publicly before, Finstad has reconstructed a life of emotional abuse and exploitation, of almost unprecedented fame, great loneliness, poignancy, and loss. She sheds an unwavering light on Natalie's complex relationships with James Dean, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Raymond Burr, Warren Beatty, and Robert Wagner and reveals the two lost loves of Natalie's life, whom her controlling mother prevented her from marrying. Finstad tells this beauty's heartbreaking story with sensitivity and grace, revealing a complex and conflicting mix of fragility and strength in a woman who was swept along by forces few could have resisted.

Book Description
Extended comic turns like The Queue and relentless, mind-bending, genre-shredding extravaganzas like Ice Trilogy have established Vladimir Sorokin as a master of the contemporary novel. It is to Sorokin’s short fiction, however, that readers must turn to encounter the wildest and most unsettling of his inventions and provocations. Sorokin is a virtuoso of parody and pastiche, as well as a poet of the black sites where the human soul stands exposed to its own incontinent desires, and Red Pyramid spans the whole of his career, from his emergence in the Soviet Union as a member of Moscow’s artistic underground to his late preeminence as an observer and interpreter of the Putin era, with its squalid parade of gruesome folly and unhinged violence. Included here are queasy tour-de-forces, like the early “Obelisk,” a story as scatological as it is conceptual; the notorious “A Month in Dachau,” which earned Sorokin his sobriquet as the Russian Sade; and profoundly unsettling texts like “Tiny Tim,” where tenderness is inseparable from horror. Sorokin’s stories have appeared in The New Yorker, n+1, Harper’s Magazine, and The Baffler. This is the first time they have been collected in English.
