Amidst a revival of interest in the novels of the abbé Prévost, this study addresses some of the interpretive issues that are being raised concerning his work, namely what intellectual, moral and aesthetic meaning should we seek in works that were designed as entertainments, and should we persist in rating Manon Lescaut more highly than the rest of Prévost's output? The narrative strategies and types of distortion inherent in each of Prévost's narrators are examined. More general observations are made on the mechanics of Prévost's narration such as the deceptive rhetorical devices of juxtaposing different accounts of the same event by two or more narrators and the use of the double registre or separation of narrator from protagonist. Other aspects of Prévost's fictional technique are considered - for example, the extent to which he drew upon contemporary traditions in the novel. Another important theme is the relationship between Prévost's fictional world and the real world in which topics such as other-portrayal and the handing of time reflect the degree of unreliability of the narrator's vision. Parallel episodes and interpolations are also used to illuminate subtly the work's central themes. The latter part of this study is dedicated to the moral dilemmas raised in Prévost's work in which the world - and the author's heroes - appear to be governed by three complex and often conflicting codes of behaviour - those of religion, honour, and 'love' or 'sensibility'. In particular, the problems of women are represented as well as the failure of the heroic ideal amongst the aristocracy. In religious matters, Prévost is revealed as a man of tolerance, ultimately concerned with human nature. The Prévost who emerges from this study combines a high degree of technical mastery with a serious moral interest in the human heart. His demystification of the ideal of heroism and his fragmented vision of the human personality are likely to appeal to the modern reader. The powerful dramatisation of moral conflict, familiar in Manon Lescaut, is indeed to be found throughout his work.

This study seeks to demonstrate that many eighteenth-century French authors displayed a discerning awareness of the gendering of the public/private division at its inception, identifying a range of ways in which women were relegated to a private space and only men were permitted to participate in the quickly evolving public sphere. Examining five eighteenth-century French novels---Montesquieu's Lettres persanes, Prevost's Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut and Histoire d'une Grecque moderne, Graffigny's Lettres d'une Peruvienne, and Rousseau's Julie, ou La Nouvelle Heloise---this thesis argues that these works both exploit and challenge the alleged mysterious nature of women and the perceived inexplicability of l'eternel feminin as a locus of uncritical thinking. It explores how these texts compel their readers to think critically and to reflect on the power differential between men and women in the public sphere. It argues that these works of fiction self-reflexively emphasize the role that representation and, more specifically, male control and manipulation of representation play in the oppression of women and their exclusion from the public sphere. It interprets the specific narrative strategies undertaken in these novels to show that, repeatedly and self-consciously, these works focus the readers' interpretive attention on the unstable and damaging discrepancies between male and female access to Enlightenment values, values that are identified as the necessary foundation for a strong and healthy public sphere. A close analysis reveals the writers' keen awareness of the social mechanisms that perpetuate harmful prejudice and oppression and shows how these authors embedded a critique of the ideological practices that enabled sexual discrimination. Each chapter, devoted to a particular novel, examines specific textual techniques engaged to obfuscate and oppress the female voice, but also highlights the methods of resistance employed by the female heroines to challenge the male-controlled narratives framing her. This study thus seeks to promote new feminist readings of these important eighteenth-century novels and to offer fresh perspectives on the place they hold in the feminist literary tradition.

"Clarissa" on the Continent defines and explores two strategies of literary translation—creative vs. preservative and strong vs. weak—as they transform one of the most influential English novels. Thomas Beebee compares the two opposing strategies as they influence the French translation of Clarissa by the novelist Antione François de Prévost and the German translation by the Göttingen Orientalist Johann David Michaelis, and in doing so he demonstrates that each translator found authority for his procedure within the text itself. Each translation is also examined in light of Richardson's other writings and placed in its literary and cultural context. This study uses translations in order to interpret Clarissa, to show how the basis for the novel's reception on the Continent was laid, and to explore the differences and interactions among three literary and cultural systems of the eighteenth century. The close examination of these two important translations enable the formulation of not only a theory of creative vs. preservative translation but also the interconnections between literary theory and translation theory. Beebee also looks at later translations of Clarissa as products of literary and historical change and at Prévostian strategies of the novel.
