Book Description
A true epic story of survival by a Maine sailor who was shipwrecked off the coast of Cuba and captured by cruel Cuban pirates, before making a harrowing escape to freedom. Daniel Collins (1801-1885) sailed from Wiscasset as second mate of the American brig Betsey, Captain Ellis Hilton, bound to Matanzas, on or about the 25th of November. In his 1825 book "Narrative of the Shipwreck of the Brig Betsy," Daniel Collins describes how the brig was shipwrecked when it ran aground off the coast of Cuba and how Collins and six others rowed to a small island in their rowboat, where they were met by several local fishermen. Their relief was short-lived, however, for the fishermen sold them out to a group of greedy pirates. Collins would later make a harrowing escape into a mangrove swamp, where he faced other dangers.

Book Description
The tragic tale of the sinking of the famine ship, the St. John in Massachusetts Bay in 1849. The Great Irish Famine drove huge numbers of Irish men and women to leave the island and pursue their survival in foreign lands. In 1847, some 200,000 people sailed for Boston alone. Of this massive group, 2,000 never made it to their destination, killed by disease and hunger during the voyages, their remains consigned to a watery grave. The sinking of the brig St. John off the coast of Massachusetts in October 1849, was only one of many tragic events to occur during this mass exodus. The ship had sailed from Galway, loaded with passengers so desperate to escape the effects of famine that some had walked from as far afield as Clare to reach the ship. The passengers on the St. John made it to within sight of the New World before their ship went down and they were abandoned by their captain, who denied that there had been any survivors when he and some of his crew made it ashore. For those who died in the seas off Massachusetts, there was nothing to mark their last resting place; no name, no memory of them ever having existed, just another statistic in a terrible tragedy.

Charles Cochelet sailed from Nantes on May 14, 1819 on the brig Sophia, (Captain Scheult). The Captain tried to sight the Madeiras and the Canaries, but was baffled by the winds and let the currents sweep his ship too far to the eastward. On May 30 the ship went aground on the coast of Africa. M. Cochelet and his companions were captured by the desert Arabs, and enslaved. They were sold and resold, and at last reached Mogadore, where he was ransomed, and finally arrived back in France, at Marseilles, February 8, 1820.
