Book Description
Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) can be a critical link between the macroworld and the realm of nanobiotechnology. Top-down MEMS methods and devices will likely serve as an important handle for interfacing with the bottom-up techniques and structures that typify nanobiotechnology. This volume focuses on recent advances in the fields of MEMS and BioMEMS, including microfluidics, bioanalysis, packaging, materials and fabrication methods. It is clear from these presentations that top-down semiconductor-based processing remains vital. Indeed, frontiers are expanding within this realm, with new research on materials like poly-SiGe. However, new materials, particularly polymers, and bottom-up methods such as soft lithography and chemical synthesis, are continually gaining in utility and importance. It is also apparent from this volume that microanalytical techniques continue to be advanced, including new ways of separating samples by optical, adhesion-based and dielectrophoretic methods. And sensors, always of interest, are demonstrated here by research into sensors for environmental and material analysis. Capacitance-based sensors for DNA analysis, and magnetic sensors for position sensing, are also highlighted. Finally, systems for direct interfacing with biological systems are addressed, with presentations on neural recording methods, retinal implants, and tissue engineering.

Book Description
Controlling the properties of materials by modifying their composition and by manipulating the arrangement of atoms and molecules is a dream that can be achieved by nanotechnology. As one of the fastest developing and innovative -- as well as well-funded -- fields in science, nanotechnology has already significantly changed the research landscape in chemistry, materials science, and physics, with numerous applications in consumer products, such as sunscreens and water-repellent clothes. It is also thanks to this multidisciplinary field that flat panel displays, highly efficient solar cells, and new biological imaging techniques have become reality. This second, enlarged edition has been fully updated to address the rapid progress made within this field in recent years. Internationally recognized experts provide comprehensive, first-hand information, resulting in an overview of the entire nano-micro world. In so doing, they cover aspects of funding and commercialization, the manufacture and future applications of nanomaterials, the fundamentals of nanostructures leading to macroscale objects as well as the ongoing miniaturization toward the nanoscale domain. Along the way, the authors explain the effects occurring at the nanoscale and the nanotechnological characterization techniques. An additional topic on the role of nanotechnology in energy and mobility covers the challenge of developing materials and devices, such as electrodes and membrane materials for fuel cells and catalysts for sustainable transportation. Also new to this edition are the latest figures for funding, investments, and commercialization prospects, as well as recent research programs and organizations.

Book Description
This book from the Materials Research Society emphasizes the broad scientific and technological interest in applications of organic materials to optoelectronics and optics. Materials synthesis, modification, and characterization from the nanoscale to the mesoscale to the macroscale are discussed. Approaches for modeling and theoretical analysis of these materials are highlighted. Also featured in the volume are a keynote talk from Professor Alan Heeger, 2000 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, as well as five papers from the Microphotonics symposium that address photonic crystals involving organic materials. Additional topics include: metal/organic interfaces - electronic structure and charge injection; photonic/nonlinear optical materials and devices; design and synthesis of electroluminescent materials; applications in displays; electrochromic polymers/sensors; organic transistors; photovoltaics and photodetectors - transport in bulk organic materials and novel patterning schemes.

Book Description
Fifty-seven papers examine the synthesis, characterization, and processing of nanoparticulate materials. Selected from the talks and posters given at the November symposium organized by the Materials Research Society, the papers look at applications in the areas of optics, magnetics, electronics, advanced energy storage, nano- dispersions, and biology. Major topics include methods for production of controlled size and shape of nanoparticles, ability to process nanoparticles to form uniform dispersions, directed assembly of nanoparticles at specific locations, large scale production, and surface control of nanoparticle materials for tailoring of specific properties.
