"This report summarises the findings of the 2006-07 Swaziland Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS) carried out by the Swaziland Central Statistical Office (CSO). The SDHS is part of the worldwide MEASURE Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) pogram, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Most of the funds for the local costs of the survey were provided by the Government of Swaziland and multiple donors, namely the National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS (NERCHA), UNAIDS/Swaziland, UNFPA/Swaziland, UNICEF/Swaziland, Italian Corporation the World Health Organization, and Population Services International (PSI). The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided additional funds through the MEASURE DHS project to support the local costs and the technical assistance provided by Macro International Inc. Through an arrangment with Macro, the Global Clinical Virology Laboratories (GCVL) of South Africa also provided assistance with the training and laboratory processing for the HIV testing component of the survey. The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) of South Africa assisted during the design phase of the survey." - t.p. verso.

The Namibian constitution makes full provision for education as a fundamental human right and freedom. Three years into independence, as part of the government’s educational policy, the ‘Education for All Policy’ was launched as a stepping stone to free quality education. However, inequities have become widely pronounced within the Namibian educational system. Democracy and Education in Namibia and beyond debates the education–democracy nexus in Namibia and the southern African context. It defines and explores the meaning of democracy and related concepts. It also looks at what democracy means in the context of human rights and access to education. Worldwide, Namibia ranks high regarding gender equality. However, many women are intimidated by violence perpetrated by men. This book is based on a social anthropological field research in the small town of Outjo, situated in Northern Central Namibia, over a period of 14 months. Gender is learnt, lived and reproduced in a societal frame. Violence against women, too, is perpetrated by men in a societal context. By using mainly qualitative research methods, Sonja Gierse-Arsten looks at male and female perspectives to reach a holistic understanding and to provide a basis for sustainable changes towards equal gender relations. She traces the transition from a hierarchical gender system during colonial times to the aspired equal gender relations in present Namibia. Current challenges characterised by poverty and great economic inequalities form the framework in which gender is performed and violence perpetrated. This study offers inspirations to re-think gender to reach substantive gender equality and to overcome the normalisation of violence.

Idasas Democracy Index initially developed for South Africa is being expanded into Southern Africa in an effort to broaden the capacity of individuals and organisations monitoring and supporting democratic governance efforts in the region. This inaugural Democracy Index for Namibia is intended to set a benchmark for democracy to be measured against. The tool assesses the countrys depth of democracy through five focus areas: participation, elections, accountability, political rights, and human dignity. The research relies on expert analysis to answer a set of questions that interrogate how closely, in practice, democracy meets the broad ideal of self-representative government. More specifically, to what extent can citizens control elected officials and government appointees who make decisions about public affairs? And how equal are citizens to one another in this accountability process? The purpose of the scores is to assist citizens in making their own judgements, based on the information made available, to stimulate national debate and to provide democracy promoters with a tool for identifying issues and needs that can be addressed by education, advocacy, training, institution building and policy revision.
