The Nagaland Environmental Protection & Economic Development (NEPED) project is intended to improve the income and welfare of farmers in Nagaland (eastern India) uplands through improved agro-forestry practices & more sustainable resource management. The project uses participatory research approaches & draws on local innovations & genetic resources. In 1999, the project undertook a self-assessment at a workshop held in Kohima, home base of the Project Operations Unit and capital of Nagaland. The assessment methodology, known as outcome mapping, was designed to capture the changes in behaviours which NEPED has helped support to meet its objectives. This report reviews this methodology and presents the two primary outputs of the workshop: an assessment of NEPED's progress in terms of four outcome challenges, and an assessment of the performance of NEPED itself in terms of seven identified organizational practices.

Environmentalists have tended to disparage shifting cultivation (sometimes called 'swidden cultivation' or 'slash-and-burn agriculture') as unsustainable due to its supposed role in deforestation and land degradation. Land Conflicts Across Frontiers compares Myanmar’s journey with North East India on the critical and contested issue of land.
