Some of it was developed for a series of addresses at commencements of medical schools and before medical societies, @n the general topic how old the new is in surgery, medicine, dentistry, and pha information thus presented aroused interest, the accomplishments of the physicians and surgeons of a period that is usu ally thought quite sterile in medical science proved, indeed, so astonishing, that I was tempted to cont neot the details for a volume in the Fordham Uni versity Press series. There is no pretence to any original investigation in the history of medicine, nor to any extended consultation of original documents. No one can tell when disease may strike, when an accident may sever an arte ry, and we should be always prepared for such emergencies. In the preparation of this work, I have endeavored to describe each disease in as plain and simple a manner as possible, avoiding so far as was in my power, the use of technical or scientific terms, and expressing myself in plain English, so that a child may under stand.
