The essays in this volume grew out of the reflections and discussions conducted during the second international conference "Impulses from Salzburg" from May 6 to 9, 2008, on "Facing Tragedies". In accordance with the aims of this project, participants were asked to reflect not simply on the nature and meaning of tragedy but also on ways in which those who are the victims of tragedy make sense of, or cope with, their condition. She is one of the children born of the incestuous union of the king of Thebes Oedipus and his own mother, Jocasta. Antigone is the sister of Ismene, Eteocle and Polynice. She demonstrates unparalleled dedication and greatness of soul in mythology.When his father is driven out of Thebes by his brothers and when, with his eyes broken, he has to beg for food on the roads, Antigone serves him as a guide. She watches over him until the end of his life and assists him in his last moments.Then Antigone returns to Thebes. She knows a new and cruel test. His brothers Etéocle and Polynice are fighting for power. The latter calls on a foreign army to besiege the city and fight his brother Etéocle. After the death of the two brothers, Creon, their uncle takes power. He ordered a solemn funeral for Eteocles and forbade the burial of Polynice, who, in his view, had been guilty of bearing arms against his country with the help of foreigners. Thus the soul of Polynice will never rest. However, Antigone, who considers the duty of burying the dead to be sacred, goes one night to her brother's body and pours a few handfuls of earth upon him according to the rite. Creon learns from a guard that Antigone has covered Polynice's body with dust. Antigonus is brought before him and he is sentenced to death. She is buried alive in the tomb of Labdacides. Rather than starving, she prefers to hang herself.Hemon, son of Creon and fiancé of Antigone commits suicide in despair. Portrayals of Antigone in Portugal gathers a collection of essays on the Portuguese drama rewritings of this Theban myth produced in the 20th and 21st centuries. For each of the cases analysed, the Portuguese historical, political and cultural context is described. This perspective is expanded through a dialogue with coeval European events. As concerns Portugal, this results principally in political and feminist approaches to the texts. Since the importation of the Sophoclean model is often indirect, the volume includes comparisons with intermediate sources, namely French (Cocteau, Anouilh) and Spanish (María Zambrano), which were extremely influential on the many and diversified versions written in Portugal during this period.

What are counterfactuals and what is their point? In many cases, none at all. It may be true that if kangaroos didn't have tails, they would fall over, but they do have tails and if they didn't they wouldn't be kangaroos (or would they?). This is the sort of thing that can give counterfactuals a bad name, as inhabitants of a La La Land of the mind. On the other hand, counterfactuals do useful service across a broad range of disciplines in both the sciences and the humanities, including philosophy, history, cosmology, biology, cognitive psychology, jurisprudence, economics, art history, literary theory. They are also richly, albeit sometimes treacherously, present in the everyday human realm of how our lives are both imagined and lived: in the 'crossroads' scenario of decision-making, the place of regret in retrospective assessments of paths taken and not taken, and, at the outer limit, as the wish not to have been born.
