Book Description
‘When I saw you in Pondicherry, at the age of 40, before you passed away, you recognized the 8-year-old girl you had taken to your centre before being adopted in Belgium in 1976. My return to you was the logical step after a long inner journey in search of my origins. It wasn’t easy for me to make this trip back. But once the decision was made, our reunion ushered in a thousand discoveries in my native country, and at the same time it helped me to see, in a different light, the rich, deeply touching, and sometimes difficult years that I had experienced as a child, and then as a young adult in the West. You will read, in these letters I send you, about my painful arrival in Belgium, and the abused childhood from which I am now cured, but also the often extraordinary encounters and events that have made me who I am today’.

Sebastian & Sons: A Brief History Of The Mrdangam Makers
Author: T. M. Krishna
Publisher: Context
ISBN: 9395073586
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 333
Book Description
About the Book MUSICIAN AND ACTIVIST T.M. KRISHNA INVESTIGATES THE HISTORY OF THE MRDANGAM AND MEETS THE INVISIBLE KEEPERS OF A TRADITION: THE MRDANGAM MAKERS. The mrdangam is an integral part of the Karnatik stage, its primary percussion instrument. Yet—startling as this is—the instrument as we know it is only a century old. T.M. Krishna investigates the history of the mrdangam and meets the invisible keepers of a tradition: the mrdangam makers. The making process is an intellectually, aesthetically and physically taxing one. From acquiring the skins for the circular membranes and straps to the wood for the drum, from curing the material to the final construction, and at the end of it all, making sure that it has the tone that the mrdangam player wants, mrdangam-making is also a highly nuanced operation at every stage. While several artists have been credited with the evolution of the instrument, including the stalwart Palghat Mani Iyer, none of them had knowledge of a fundamental aspect of the making: hide. The quality of the hide and how it is cured, cut, stretched, bound and braided impacts the tone, timbre and sound of the instrument. This requires a highly tuned ear and an ability to translate abstract ideas expressed by musicians into the corporeal reality of a mrdangam. Yet, their contribution to the art of the mrdangam is dismissed as labour and repair—when it is spoken of at all. There are legendary mrdangam players, yes; there are also distinguished mrdangam makers, many of them from Dalit Christian communities, who remain on the fringes of the Karnatik community. Sebastian and Sons explores the world of these artists, their history, lore and lived experience to arrive at a more organic and holistic understanding of the music that the mrdangam makes.

Environmental Change and Sustainable Social Development
Author: Sven Hessle
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317142357
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 203
Book Description
How does climate change affect social work and social development? What actions are needed to integrate the three pillars of economic development, environmental development and social protection? With global warming and the increase in natural disasters due to the emission of greenhouse gases, an alternative approach to the natural environment is vital. The main focus of this volume is to emphasize the person-in-environment concept and to find measures for its implementation. For social work the environment has traditionally been viewed as a world of human relationships as opposed to the interaction between man and environment. This informative and incisively written edited collection brings together experts from around the world to analyze the person-in-environment concept and to find measures for its implementation. Through the presentation of theoretical and practical platforms for environmental social work or ’green social work’, we hope to bring about a new paradigmatic shift in our attitude to the concept of person-in- environment.
