Book Description
Excerpt from My Life as an Explorer More than that, I began at once to fit myself for this career. In Norway, in those days, there were no organized athletic sports as there _are now every where. The only sports at all were football and skiing. Although I did not like football, I went in for it as part of the task of training my body to endure hardship. But to skiing I took with perfect naturalness and intense enthusiasm. At every opportunity of freedom from school, from November to April, I went out in the open, exploring the hills and mountains which rise in every direction around Oslo, increasing my skill in traversing ice and snow and hardening my muscles for the coming great adventure. In those days, houses were kept tightly closed in winter, so I was regarded as an innovator and some thing of a freak because I insisted on sleeping with my bedroom windows wide open, even in the bitterest weather. My mother anxiously expostulated with me about this practice. To her I explained that I liked fresh air, but of course it was really a part of my conscientious hardening process. Book Description
In this classic memoir and travelogue, the Swedish explorer shares the story of his epic journey along the ancient Silk Road. After a childhood spent reading tales of adventure in far-off places, Sven Hedin knew by the time he was twelve years old that he wanted to be an explorer. He lived in an age when maps still contained uncharted territories and he wished to travel to these mysterious destinations. By the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, he traveled along the Silk Road in Asia for three decades. In My Life as an Explorer, Hedin recounts his journeys along the ancient route. He discovers long-lost cities, maps unfamiliar rivers, and finds himself in many life-threatening situations. He makes a perilous trek through the Taklamakan desert in China where his party runs dangerously low on water. He climbs treacherous mountains and evades ruthless bandits. He infiltrates Lhasa, the Tibetan city restricted from Westerners by penalty of death. And while he lives to tell the tale, his journey is not without sacrifice . . . Originally published in 1926, Hedin’s story of real-life adventure was a worldwide bestseller. It delighted audiences then and continues to do so. “A fascinating period piece as well as a nail-biting read.” —The Guardian

Book Description
Excerpt from My Life of Exploration The coast range not far away, at an elevation of four thousand feet, seemed always to beckon to me so invitingly; there ought to be rare, probably new, species of animal life in the dense jungle of that lonely range. But how to get there when the blacks of that region were reputed to be bad? After a while I decided on a bold undertaking, to camp and travel with these aborigines alone. I felt that surely they would help me to find animals hitherto unknown to science. As far as I know, no white man has ever attempted to camp alone with the wild natives of Australia; the first warning the colonists give you is. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Career of Sir Henry M. Stanley, G. C. B., D. C. L., LL. D., Etc: The African Explorer "Strong in will, To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield." -Tennyson. "Ulysses." Stanley's career is the history of the development of the Dark Continent. He has, indeed, been called the Columbus of Central Africa, but the title is inadequate. At the head of a long roll of honorable names, he has placed his own, - not by some mere chance of circumstance or fortuitous turn of fortune's wheel, but by dint of sheer determination "to seek, to find, and not to yield," by a rare courage, and a devotion to duty hardly short of heroism. He is more than a mere discoverer, for the scene of his many marvelous exploits has also been the center around which his highest hopes and deepest feelings have revolved. For twenty years he has been an African traveler - for fifteen, an African enthusiast. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from George Brown, D. D. Pioneer-Missionary and Explorer, an Autobiography I have written this account of my life very unwillingly, in deference to the oft-repeated wishes of my many friends and of the Conference to which I belong. I have endeavoured, however, to make it in some measure a history of the principal events in the Mission Districts with which I have been more immediately connected. My difficulty has been to condense the account into reasonable limits, and in doing this I have had to omit some details which might not interest the general reader, as well as particulars of the manners and customs, folk lore, and other matters of interest to students of anthropology and ethnology. These, however, I hope to be able to give in a separate volume in the not distant future. Descriptions of several collections and specimens of natural history which I forwarded to England will be found in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London for the years 1877 to 1881.
