Book Description
For ages 4-10 Do you know a child that is struggling to understand why their military mommy or daddy missed their baseball game, recital or a birthday? If you do then "Why My Dad?" is for you. It is a fact that the military member is not the only one that serves his or her country. The family of that military member serves as well. As one would expect, the little military members that stay at home are the most affected. They have to endure the temporary duty or lengthy deployments that are part of the job. Unfortunately, the children are often too young and too confused to really understand this. All they know is mommy or daddy is gone. "Why My Dad?" offers a warm military story paralleled with a situation to which they can relate, "The Bully." If they haven't been affected by a bully they know someone that has. This book is designed to reach any branch of the service at any point in time.

Book Description
The story my father told me long ago goes like this. Sometime during his Army career, at a time and place unknown, probably 1943 or early 1944, he would routinely check a certain bulletin board for the names or numbers of those soldiers slated to go overseas. One day, he noticed his name had "flopped" from the "not going overseas" list to the "going overseas" list. My father also noticed he had been "switched" with another soldier who, the day before, was going overseas, and suddenly, he was not but my father was. This usually did not happen. So he decided to try and find out how he had been "switched." He wrote a letter to an off-base name as high in the Army hierarchy as he could find. He explained the mysterious switch and waited. He wanted to know how and why his name had been switched with some other guy. He was twenty-two and away from familiar surroundings for the first time and was panicked and in fear. He prayed. After some time, my dad was summoned to the office of his camp head honcho who told him: "I'm not sure who you are or who you know, but I am holding orders to personally transfer you to any place you want to go in the Continental United States for the duration of the war." My father said, "Florida." His military record was skeletal at best. I decided to find out where he was and when. That is the story of this book.

Book Description
Thankfully, a few months later, I got the best Christmas gift of all: my dad's life. I went up to Portland and visited him in the hospital. He was in the hospital for three months. He couldn't even talk or eat the first week in the hospital. My dad always tells me that when I first saw him in the hospital, I stood over him, grim faced, like I was an angel guarding him. I did not say a word. I just stood there. And though many people do not know this, while I was standing there, a tear rolled down my cheek and landed on the hospital blanket covering my dad's injured leg. Just one tear. I did not break into tears or sob; I just silently cried all my misery into one tear; one tear of healing, which I gave to my dad . . .
