Book Description
"Devastating attacks on Israel and the Saudi royal family fuel the Islamic divide between Sunni and Shi'a. The future of humankind is imperiled as their sectarian conflict escalates. US military commanders, meanwhile, are alarmed by a resurgence of intelligent visitations from another realm. Estefan, a Catholic priest quietly devoted to his rural New Mexico flock, confronts a desert apparition of the Virgin Mary who directs him to deliver an ultimatum. But he must first overcome his mistrust of her origin and true purpose. This unlikely hero engages two companions: Johnson, a wealthy former seminary roommate, failed Jesuit and irrepressible playboy; and Miguel, a talented Mexican-American teen athlete. They pool their talents and resources in an attempt to save Earth from worldwide catastrophe. Author Dan Wright has been investigating aerial phenomena for twenty-five years, including seven years as Deputy Director of the Mutual UFO Network, Inc. (MUFON). He has undertaken or overseen investigations of thousands of UFO cases -- ordinary people suddenly confronted by extraordinary events. This gripping novel draws from Wright's experiences and explores an all-too-possible future given the direction our politics, our nations and our religions are headed.

My Brother Esau is a Hairy Man
Author: Susan Niditch
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Health & Fitness

Pages : 176
Book Description
The story of Jacob and Esau is told in the book of Genesis. With his mother's help, Jacob impersonates his hairy older twin by dressing in Esau's clothes and covering his own hands and the nape of his neck with the hairy hide of goats. Fooled by this ruse, their blind father, Isaac, is tricked into giving the younger son the blessing of the firstborn. This is only one of many biblical stories in which hair plays a pivotal role. In recent years, there has been an explosion of scholarly interest in the relationship between culture and the body. Hair plays an integral role in the way we represent and identify ourselves. The way we treat our hair has to do with aesthetics, social structure, religious identity, and a host of other aspects of culture. In societies modern and ancient, the hairdo is one key to a group's cultural code. In ancient Israel, hair signifies important features of identity with respect to gender, ethnicity, and holiness. Susan Niditch seeks a deeper understanding of Israelite culture as expressed, shaped, and reinforced in images of hair. Among her examples is the tradition's most famous long-haired hero, Samson. The hair that assures Samson's strength is a common folktale motif, but is also important to his sacred status as a Nazirite. Niditch examines the meaning of the Nazirite identity held by Samuel as well as Samson arguing that long hair is involved in a complex set of cultural assumptions about men, warrior status, and divine election. In addition to biblical texts, Niditch looks at pictorial and other material evidence. She concludes by examining the troubling texts in which men impose hair cutting or loosening upon women, revealing much about attitudes to women and their place in Israelite culture. Much has been written on the presentation of the body in various literatures, including the Bible, but the role of hair in ancient Israel has been neglected. This book charts a new path for studies on the body, religion, and culture.

Daughters of Eve
Author: Martyn Whittock
Publisher: Lion Books
ISBN: 0745980872
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
Women play an immensely important role in the Bible: from Eve to the Virgin Mary, Sarah to Mary Magdalene, Naomi to the anonymous woman suffering severe menstrual bleeding who was healed by Jesus. They are a sisterhood of faith. As such, they challenge many of our assumptions about the role of women in the development of the biblical story; about the impact of faith on lives lived in the 'heat and dust' of the real world. Here we will meet the prostitute who ended up in the genealogy of Jesus, a national resistance fighter, a determined victim of male sexual behaviour who challenged patriarchal power, a far from meek and mild mother of Jesus, a woman whose life has been so misrepresented that she is now the subject of the most bizarre conspiracy theories, and more. Renowned historians and Biblical scholars, Martyn and Esther Whittock, take the reader on a fascinating journey, one unafraid to ask difficult questions, such as, 'Was Eve set up to fall?'
