Book Description
Mycology in the Tropics: Updates on Philippine Fungi comprehensively discusses the current state of Philippine mycology, including historical developments in the field, listings of fungi with diverse utilizations or applications, and those that cause economic impact on crop production in the country. Specifically, the chapters in the book introduce tropical mycology, describe different fungal groups, their biodiversity and conservation, and give insights into the applications of mycology in agriculture, health, industry and the environment. The book also includes quarantine regulations on economically important diseases and describes the importance of developing local studies on fungi. - Provides a leading reference that encapsulates the many facets of mycology in the Philippines - Gives up-to-date developments on Philippine mycology, especially topics rarely discussed, such as the roles of mycological herbaria and culture collections, traditional knowledge on mushrooms, and on quarantine guidelines of crops with fungal diseases - Presents an introduction to fungal species reported in aquatic and terrestrial habitats - Highlights local studies on fungi in relation to diseases in human, animals and plants and summarizes key findings on their use in the industry and the environment

Book Description
This text not only explores the breeding problems for Agaricus bisporus, the button mushroom, but approaches the subject in the context of the large range of edible mushrooms which are currently under commercial cultivation worldwide. From the background and general objectives of culture collection and breeding to the genetic systems of edible mushrooms and the molecular biological approaches to breeding, the coverage is in-depth and current. The applications of breeding programmes for specific purposes, including provision of a food source, production of high value fungal metabolites and upgrading of lignocellulosic wastes and wastewater treatment are also discussed.

Book Description
Completely revised, updated and enlarged, now encompassing two volumes, this third edition of Fruit and Vegetables reviews and evaluates, in comprehensive detail, postharvest aspects of a very wide international range of fresh fruit and vegetables as it applies to their physiology, quality, technology, harvest maturity determination, harvesting methods, packaging, postharvest treatments, controlled atmosphere storage, ripening and transportation. The new edition of this definitive work, which contains many full colour photographs, and details of species not covered in the previous editions, provides key practical and commercially-oriented information of great use in helping to ensure that fresh fruit and vegetables reach the retailer in optimum condition, with the minimum of deterioration and spoilage. With the constantly increasing experimental work throughout the world the book incorporates salient advances in the context of current work, as well as that dating back over a century, to give options to the reader to choose what is most relevant to their situation and needs. This is important because recommendations in the literature are often conflicting; part of the evaluation of the published results and reviews is to guide the reader to make suitable choices through discussion of the reasons for diverse recommendations. Also included is much more on the nutritional values of fruit and vegetables, and how these may vary and change postharvest. There is also additional information on the origin, domestication and taxonomy of fruit and vegetables, putting recommendations in context. Fruits and Vegetables 3e is essential reading for fruit and vegetable technologists, food scientists and food technologists, agricultural scientists, commercial growers, shippers, packhouse operatives and personnel within packaging companies. Researchers and upper level students in food science, food technology, plant and agricultural sciences will find a great deal of use within this popular book. All libraries in research establishments and universities where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies readily available for users.

Book Description
The worldwide market of medicinal mushrooms is constantly increasing considering the improvement of the level of life of population and the concerns for a healthy quality of life. The consumption of Macromycetes fungi as delicatessen food or nutraceuticals is increasing due to their gourmet features, nutritional characteristics and medicinal properties. The fruiting bodies of several fungal species contain different types of compounds that are valuable in the medical and cosmetic industry and have applications in other industrial sectors. However, the cultivation of Macromycetes is not fully disseminated at world level and just a few species are grown on a commercial scale (about 10 species). In particular, the demand of the Macromycetes Grifola frondosa (Maitake) and Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi) in their different trade presentations is increasing because of their medicinal features and their applications in the pharmaceutical industry. Thus, research and development regarding the improvement of the cultivation parameters for these two fungal species have a paramount importance in order to reach a higher coverage in their industrialization. G. frondosa is a less-known and newer species in the mushroom industry. Its cultivation presents different levels of complexity and there are a few commercial facilities for its production. Likewise, G. lucidum, although more known than Maitake, exhibits significant complexity levels during its cultivation as well. In the present book, a comprehensive compilation of the developments achieved for improving the cultivation parameters of these two species in tropical weathers aimed at implementing them at industrial scale is provided. The book presents extensive research outcomes obtained by the authors not only at small scale, but also at pilot and industrial scales. The main markets for these two species are presented as well as the most promising residual feedstocks to be used for production of Reishi and Maitake fruiting bodies in the context of countries with tropical weather. The conventional procedures for solid-state cultivation at different production scales is analyzed and specific conditions for such production in tropical weathers are also discussed. In addition, a description of the potential biologically active compounds that could be extracted from these two fungal species is provided as well as main lignocellulylitic enzymes obtained from these mushrooms. This book is intended to researchers, graduate students, technologists, and entrepreneurs as well as private firms working in the medicinal mushroom industry.

Book Description
Tropical mycology is attracting increasing interest, as the key role of fungi in tropical ecosystems and as pathogens becomes appreciated. This book is the first of two complementary volumes (Volume 2 covers Micromycetes) produced from papers given at the British Mycological Society's symposium held in Liverpool in April 2000. It describes the ecology, biology, economic dimensions and systematics of tropical Macromycetes. Written by leading experts in their field, the papers have been thoroughly edited and revised.
