The first report dealt with cities having a population of and over; the second with those having a population of from to while the present gives similar information for municipalities having a population of to on December 31, 1920. As in the previous reports, schedules were sent from the Bureau to the secretaries and treasurers of the municipalities concerned, and in the majority of cases a willing response was obtained. In 1920, the Bureau undertook a statistical survey of the urban municipalities throughout Canada having a population of 10,000 and over. The report, though regarded as tentative, proved of much interest, and the edition was quickly exhausted. Subsequently the Bureau published reports dealing respectively with towns of 3,000 to 10,000 population, and with towns and incorporated villages having a population of 1,000 to 3,000. A second survey of the larger urban centres is herewith presented. It has not been considered necessary to republish the statistics concerning street pavements, lighting systems, water supply systems, purification plants and fire and police department equipment, but in the financial tables, showing receipts, expenditures and assets, a number of additions have been made, and the present report is therefore more complete than its predecessor. The returns as furnished by muncipal officials for 1919 and published in previous reports of the Bureau showed that 61 urban municipalities estimated their population to be 10,000 or over. Of this number, Guelph, Glace Bay and Shawinigan Falls failed to report for 1920, while the return for Valleyfield showed it to have less than 10,000 population. This gives a net total of 57 municipalities recorded.
