Book Description
This book examines multinational military forces in the Global South and their connections with the global diffusion phenomenon of multinational military cooperation. In the 21st century, three international military organizations with standing headquarters in the Global South have emerged in the field of military operations. These are the Southern Cross Peace Force in Latin America, the Africa Standby Force in Africa, and the Peninsula Shield Force in the structures of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Yet the scholarly literature on multinational operations has given little attention to these organizations and is mostly focused on the Western hemisphere, particularly on European military organizations. So far, military organizations led by peripheral countries in the Global South have been neglected in systematic and comparative analyses. This book seeks to address this gap and use a novel comparative framework to examine inter-organizational differences and similarities in these three important cases. It aims to provide a gateway for theoretical growth now and for future studies, in the Global South and elsewhere. The book demonstrates that, in a global field of military management dominated by standards and resources from central countries, the phenomena of organizational isomorphism and external dependence tend to interweave in the formation of multinational forces in the Global South. A common condition is analyzed through case studies: isodependence. From historical, critical, and postcolonial studies, the book explores how the epistemic autonomy to conduct such force models in the peripheries is constrained in the context of a security geoculture whereby specific attributions, knowledge, and security functions have been unevenly distributed in the modern world system. This book will be of great interest to researchers of military studies, security studies, sociology and conflict studies, and IR in general.

Book Description
The post-cold war era presented security challenges that at one level are a continuation of the cold war era; at another level, these phenomena manifested in new forms. Whether the issues of economics and trade, transfer of technologies, challenges of intervention, or humanitarian crisis, the countries of the South (previously pejoratively labelled “Third World” or “developing” countries) have continued to address these challenges within the framework of their capabilities and concerns. The volume explores defence diplomacies, national security challenges and strategies, dynamics of diplomatic manoeuvers and strategic resource management of Latin American, southern African and Asian countries.

Book Description
In this book we propose to tackle militarization trends in Latin America which include the presence of the military organizations in some vital national economic activities, the ethics and aesthetics of the ‘military’ in popular forms of entertainment, the active engagement of military personnel in criminal activities, the Armed Forces intervention in electoral processes, the Armed Forces engagement in the cybersphere and cyberwarfare, their participation in civil defense operations, their emulation by militias, gangs and other armed non-state actors. We shall consider militarization on multiple scales from the individual body and subjectification processes to international politics from the everyday experiences and practices to the development of national strategies in Latin America and we shall avoid the dichotomy between a militarized moment and space and a demilitarized moment and space.

Book Description
This edited volume uses theoretical overviews and empirical case studies to explore both how soldiers cope with the new forms of cultural diversity occurring within various multinational military operations, and how their organizations manage them. Military organizations, like other complex organizations, are now operating in an ever more diverse environment, with the missions themselves being ever more varied, and mostly conducted in a multinational framework. Members of the military have to deal with a host of international actors in the theatre of operations, and do so in a foreign cultural environment, often in countries devastated by war. Such conditions demand a high level of intercultural competence. It is therefore crucial for military organizations to understand how military personnel manage this cultural diversity. This book will be of much interest to students of peace operations, military studies, international security, as well as sociology and business studies.

Book Description
War, as Clausewitz reminds, is the most uncertain of human political and social activities. It also imposes burdens. In an alliance among states for the promotion of collective defense or security, such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), burdens have to be shared. This study looks at the experience of the United States and other member states of NATO in four situations of multinational military intervention - Lebanon, the Persian Gulf, the Balkans, and South Asia - and considers the implications of nuclear arms reductions and nonproliferation for the US and NATO. Each case study represents an important period in the distribution of power, interest, and values, amounting to more than a sequential consideration of incidents of military intervention and/or conflict prevention. These politico-military challenges include a major coalition war, a traditional peacekeeping operation, an exercise in peace enforcement, and a conflict that combines counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism with stability and security operations.

Book Description
"The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.
