This book represents the scholarly work of the network «European Doctorate Enhancement in Peace and Conflict Studies» (EDEN), a broad training and research network linking scholars, departments and universities interested in thinking and rethinking proposals, concepts and methodologies for the expanding field of Peace and Conflict Studies from different disciplines such as law, history, sociology, anthropology, international relations, and political science. The Network has been functioning since the year 1996 and aims mainly to develop the level and quality of the discussion, to enhance the collaboration and coordination within the European academic community —encompassing the diversity of theoretical approaches in the area—, to promote intellectual understanding, and to create an appropriate institutional infrastructure and consistent financial support for academic research. The Network has also been consistently fostering the exchange and mobility of graduate students through summer Intensive Programmes and Marie Curie Fellowships so as to develop a critical mass of inter-disciplinary comparative research expertise, providing access to tutorials, methodology courses, and significant human and practical resources for a better understanding of research questions, conceptual debates, and methodological challenges. The final purpose of the network is to generate sustained debate and exchange among policy makers, NGO's, media professionals and academics, in order to facilitate a scholarly dialogue and ongoing feedback between research, knowledge dissemination and policy.

This volume looks at research methods through the lens of peace studies and peace values. Apart from reviewing established methods from peace psychology, it presents some innovative ideas for conducting research in the area of peace psychology. Many of these methods are drawn from the field, from activities used by active peace practitioners. A critical component of this volume is its core argument that peace research should be conducted by peaceful means, and should model peaceful processes. Organized thematically, the volume begins with a review of the established best practices in peace psychology research methodology, including methods for qualitative research, for quantitative research, and participative action networks. In doing so, it also points to some of the limitations of working for peace within the tradition of a single discipline and to the need to expand psychology methodology, to methodologies. We all long for peace within ourselves, families, communities, countries, and throughout the world. We wonder what we can do about the multitude of con?icts currently wreaking havoc across the globe and the continuous reports of violence in communities as well as within families. Most of the time, we contemplate solutions beyond our reach, and overlook a powerful tool that is at our disposal: forgiveness. As a genocide survivor, I know something about it. As the genocide unfolded in Rwanda in 1994, I was devastated by what I believed to be the inevitable deaths of my loved ones. The news that my parents and my seven siblings had indeed been killed was simply unbearable. Anger and bitterness became my daily companions. Likewise, I continued to wonder how the Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda could possibly reconcile after one of the most horrendous genocides of the 20th century. It was not until I came to understand the notion of forgiveness that I was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Common wisdom suggests that forgiveness comes after a perpetrator makes a genuine apology. This wisdom informs us that in the aftermath of a wrongdoing, the offender must acknowledge the wrong he or she has done, express remorse, express an apology, commit to never repeating said harm, and make reparations to theextentpossible.Onlythencanthevictimforgiveandagreetoneverseekrevenge.
