That book, by the blessing of God, has been the means of stimulating the faith of many Christians, so that hundreds have, by simple faith, been enabled to lay hold upon God for the healing of the body as well as the soul. Faith cures are multiplying. Signs are not wanting to show that the Lord is once more opening the ears of His people to His voice as the Healer of bodily maladies. Not only is this branch of the Lords work growing on my own hands at home, but during my recent visit in England, abundant evidence came to me in various ways, that the Lord is also preparing His way there, for a full restoration of the early faith for healing. This new edition places Sarah Mix (1832-1884) in the context of American religious history, and shows her influence on the emerging faith healing movement and other female healing evangelists, including Carrie Judd Montgomery and Maria Woodworth-Etter. The divine healing movement, also known as faith healing or faith cure was a significant phenomenon in American religion and culture in the late nineteenth century. More importantly, during this period of the divine healing movement, women occupied a central role as practitioners. Both the religious and secular press reported her ministry, which was so successful that physicians referred patients to her. In 1882 Sarah Mix published Faith Cures, and Answers to Prayer, which includes an account of her own healing of tuberculosis by a Methodist minister, letters of testimony from individuals who experienced her gift of healing, and press notices.

Faith in the Great Physician tells the story of how participants in the divine healing movement transformed the ways Americans coped with physical affliction and pursued bodily wellbeing. Heather D. Curtis offers critical reflection on the theological, cultural, and social forces that come into play when one questions the purpose of suffering and the possibility of healing. Belief in divine healing ran counter to a deep-seated Christian ethic that linked physical suffering with spiritual holiness. By engaging in devotional disciplines and participating in social reform efforts, proponents of faith cure embraced a model of spiritual experience that endorsed active service, rather than passive endurance, as the proper Christian response to illness and pain. Emphasizing the centrality of religious practices to the enterprise of divine healing, Curtis sheds light on the relationship among Christian faith, medical science, and the changing meanings of suffering and healing in American culture.
