Throughout the centuries Byzantium's ambitious authors were conscious of the significance of literary registers for the reception of their texts. They deliberately made use of stylistic elements or refrained from using certain features in order to reach their target audience. There are certain groups of texts dating from various periods on which these stylistic elements can be tracked precisely by comparison of two or even more versions with their model text. Such examples of rewriting can be found particularly within genres with a broader audience appeal, namely hagiography and historiography. It is in both genres that we encounter metaphrastic processes, in terms of stylistic elaboration and in terms of stylistic simplification.0As well as stylistic reshaping, metaphrasis may also encompass the addition or removal of literary and/or thematic aspects. All these processes signify intent as well as authorial interpretation. Frequently, the ideological orientation of a text is refurbished through rewriting. Teasing out these strands for exploration helps to supply a potential wealth of information on the author (if known), cultural (social, religious, historical) context, and creative ability, as well as levels of education and literacy.

La christianisation du monde antique est un thème central d'un point de vue historique (c'est un des rares événements dont les conséquences ont été essentielles pour l'histoire mondiale), d'un point de vue historiographique (c'est un des grands sujets d'étude de la fin de l'Antiquité gréco-romaine avec la disparition de l'Empire d'Occident et la fin du système civique classique), mais aussi d'un point de vue méthodologique. En effet, on croit couramment que la christianisation du monde antique fut une réalité qu'il suffirait de décrire, alors qu'il s'agit en fait de la penser, car elle est d'abord une représentation des historiens héritée de modèles antiques (Eusèbe de Césarée, Augustin d'Hippone) ou modernes (Voltaire, Marx, Freud). Pour pouvoir traiter « la christianisation du monde antique » comme sujet historique, il faut donc d'abord réfléchir sur une question d'historiens : « le problème de la christianisation du monde antique ». Pour cela, il faut faire un peu d'histoire moderne et contemporaine, analyser l'apparition et le sens du terme de christianisation, et faire le bilan de l'historiographie de la question. Ensuite, on peut tenter de penser « la christianisation du monde antique » de quatre manières : par l'analyse philologique des termes désignant la conversion en grec, latin et syriaque ; par l'étude des sources littéraires chrétiennes à propos des chrétiens, afin de mettre en évidence les représentations antiques du problème de la définition du chrétien; par le recours aux sources non littéraires (épigraphie, papyrologie, archéologie funéraire, archéologie monumentale, iconographie) afin de contourner la question des représentations liées aux textes antiques ; par l'enquête sur les sources littéraires chrétiennes à propos de la conversion des païens, qui permet de déconstruire des textes qui créaient une réalité autant qu'ils la décrivaient. The monuments of medieval Armenia have been interpreted variously over the centuries as Gothic, Byzantine, Iranian, and "Saracen". However, few scholars have offered satisfactory answers regarding their origins and relations to other architectural traditions. This study examines the scholarship on the subject in East and West and offers a persuasive explanation for the current scholarly impasse. Maranci highlights Josef Strzygowski (1865-1941), a prominent figure in the Vienna School of art history, who was closely allied to the pan-German movements of the early twentieth century. Using unpublished archival materials as well as Strzygowski's numerous publications, the author shows how the ideology of race and nation pervaded Strzygowski's theories of art, and how his ideas and persona have informed - and inhibited - subsequent generations of scholars. The concluding chapter outlines a revised study of Armenian architecture, moving from issues of architectural style to contextual inquiries of patronage and crosscultural exchange. As a detailed survey of medieval monuments and as a historiographical case study, the work addresses a broad audience: not just art historians but all readers interested in how ideology shapes our critical faculties. Christina Maranci received her Ph.D. from the department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University for a dissertation on Armenian architecture. Recipient of Gulbenkian and Mellow Fellowships, she has taught Armenian and Byzantine art at the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and Boston University. She is currently a professor of medieval art at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
