The department is charged with the responsibility for managing the wildlife resources within the State of Montana on behalf of the people of Montana for the benefit of present and future generations. Recovery programs for endangered species have been pursued by the department for many years. The desire of the department to recover endangered species is based on both law and the department's role as a public agency. This public trust, coupled with the responsibility for administration of that trust, require that welearn fromour own history and carefully evaluate the potential impact of wolf recovery in Montana.
