Byzantium and the Decline of the Roman Empire
Author: Walter Emil Kaegi
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400879558
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 304
Book Description
Professor Kaegi studies the response of the eastern half of the Roman Empire to the disintegration of western Rome, usually dated from the sack of the city of Rome in A.D. 410. Using sources from the fifth and sixth centuries, he shows that the eastern empire had a clear awareness of, interest in, and definite opinions on the disasters that befell Rome in the west. Religious arguments, both Pagan and Christian, tended to dominate the thinking of the intellectuals, but economic and diplomatic activity also contributed to the reaction. This reaction, the author finds, was in a distinctly eastern manner and reflected quite naturally the special conditions prevailing in the eastern provinces. Originally published in 1968. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Author: Marc Lodewijckx
Publisher: Leuven University Press
ISBN: 9789061867227
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 524
Book Description
The contents of this volume of essays in his honour gives a good overview of the fields in which Prof. Van Doorselaer has been active throughout his academic career. This book is especially an Album Amicorum, filled with reminiscences and intentions to continue the work. The voluminous size of this book may be considered as an adequate measure of the overall sympathy for Prof. Van Doorselaer. We hope that this publication may encourage him to remain active in the field of archaeology, and that the co-operation among colleagues, stimulated by this project, may be continued in the future.

ISBN: 1912667371
Category : Antiques & Collectibles
Languages : en
Pages : 777
Book Description
This tenth volume of Roman Imperial Coinage completed the first edition of the series founded by Mattingly and Sydenham in 1923. Its layout is based on the division between the eastern and western parts of the empire, and the reigns of successive emperors. Strategies of Distinction
Author: Walter Pohl
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004609512
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 373
Book Description
Between the fourth and the eight century, a number of 'experimental' polities had to create new forms of legitimacy and organisation to overcome a Roman world based on Empire, city and tribe. In the course of time, a new world developed that relied on Christendom, kingdom and people to pull an increased variety of local communities together. Of these three factors, the ethnic one certainly is the most elusive. This volume discusses the process of construction of ethnic identities. What did names, law, language, costume, burial rites, rhetoric, culture, royal representation or ideology mean, and to whom? This is the question that is common to the papers assembled here. Even though they span several centuries, and a geographic area from the Iberian peninsula to the Black Sea steppes, they all deal with the ways how ethnic distinction became a political factor in the post-Roman world.
