Monitoring Financial Flows for Health Research

Category : Health

Pages : 57
Book Description
Total worldwide investment into health research, from the public and the private sectors combined, was calculated at close to US$73.5 billion for 1998, as compared to US$56 billion in 1992 (in current terms). It is estimated that up to one third of this increase is in real terms. In the course of the study, it became evident that important changes were taking place in the health donor community with implications for health research in, and relevant to, developing countries. Public funding (47% of the total funding into health research) grew in the advanced countries as a group and in virtually all the individual countries. The main objective of the study was less to provide this overall figure than to describe the process for arriving at these estimates and to indicate what to expect from the various data sources and research approaches. In addition, the study gives information on health research funding by developing countries not available before.

Monitoring Financial Flows for Health Research, 2009
Author: Erik Landriault
Publisher:
ISBN: 9782940401239
Category : Developing countries
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
One of the key messages heard as part of the 2008 Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health in Bamako, was that not only do low- and middle-income countries need to develop capacity to conduct research, but there needs to be a greater sense of accountability for health research systems globally. This issue of Monitoring Financial Flows examines the importance of monitoring financial flows to health research, with a special focus on 7 selected Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Paraguay and Uruguay. By describing how these countries established priorities for health research in recent years, the study makes the case that with limited resources, governments benefit from better alignment of national health research priorities with the populations' health profile.
