Excerpt from Modest Catalog of One Hundred Choice and Standard Varieties of Gladiolus Bulbs, 1926 When cutting the blooms, always allow about four good leaves to remain on the stalk, as the plant will need these leaves to form a good Vigorous bulb for the next sea son and to develop small bulblets or cormels which should be saved and planted, either with your large bulbs or by themselves the next year. These small bulblets or cor mels are new blood and will always be the same as the old bulb. New varieties are propagated from seeds which form after the flowers bloom. Dig your bulbs when the stalk turns brown, or if the season causes the stalks to keep green late in September or October, dig them when the ground is dry enough to handle nicely.
