Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Irrigation While practically all authorities agree as to the many advantages that the sprinkling system of irrigation has over any of the old methods, they all realize and admit that the many devices that have heretofore been used in the attempt to apply water in this natural method have not only been unsuccessful, but the cost has been beyond the means of the average grower. Among these sprinklers have been revolv ing ones galore, all of which have been absolute failures on account of.the small area covered, the great cost of installa tion, inequality of distribution and short life. Another sys tem which has been used quite extensively, but only on account of nothing better being available, is the overhead perforated pipe system, the principal objections to which are the posts, which if of wood only last two or three years, and if of metal are very expensive to install, besides being very much in the way of cultivation, the constant turning of pipe required, the small amount of water distributed, the excessive loss by evaporation, the inequality of distribution and the stopping of tubes. This last being one of the prin cipal objections, as the smallest particle of pipe scale or other sediment will obstruct the very minute water passages. Book Description
Excerpt from The Primer of Irrigation HE author of this work has had in mind for many years the outlines of a book which would lend aid to those who are beginners in irrigation farming. After work was commenced on this book it was realized that much more than fifty or even one hundred pages would be necessary to even half-way cover the subject. And before it was completed nearly three hundred pages of type were used. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Practical Design of Irrigation Works This book is written with the special object of setting forth the principles governing the design of irrigation works in a detailed, as well as a general aspect, so that any engineer, even if not specially conversant with this branch of engineering science, may be enabled, by the use of proper dis crimination in the selection of models, and by due attention to the principles on which good design must be grounded, to evolve suitable plans of irrigation works. In order to effect this purpose to the best advantage, an entirely new departure has been adopted in the method of instruction pursued. This consists mainly in the production of plans of existing or projected works, combined with a systematic analysis of the salient points involved in each design. This critical examination will expose the good and the bad features, so that the reader will be enabled to exercise discrimination in what to accept and follow and what to reject. At the same time, in order to thoroughly illustrate the subject, alternative designs for the works thus reviewed, embodying the suggested improvements, are provided, wherever such appears desirable. The method of procedure thus sketched is clearly superior, from an instructive point of view, to the ordinary one of dumping down a number of record plans of various works, some of which are of quite obsolete form, without any critical remarks on their merits or demerits from the stand point of modern development. The inexperienced designer in that case is left without guide in the selection of suitable types, and consequently is unconsciously led to follow old precedents in design, to the exclusion of more modern improvements, or to the exercise of his own ingenuity. Book Description
Excerpt from Irrigation Works: Constructed by the United States Government As a modern activity of the Caucasian race, irrigation in the United States on any considerable scale seems to have had its beginning in Utah in the settlement of the Salt Lake Valley. The early settlements of California, New Mexico, and other arid States extended the practice of the early Spaniards and the Indians, and irrigation developed along with the slow settlement of these then remote regions. During the early history of irrigation farmers and groups of farmers naturally confined their efforts mainly to diverting small streams upon adjacent valleys where the slope of the country and the topography were such as to make the work easy and cheap. With the values of land then existing no expensive enter prise was practicable. Such development proceeding for nearly half a century, widely distributed over the arid region, irrigated in the aggregate a very large area of land. The farmers em ployed the cheapest class of construction and seldom counted their own time in computing costs, which are hence reported very low. Book Description
Excerpt from Operation and Maintenance of Irrigation Systems The operation and maintenance of irrigation systems is a subject of very active interest in the western states. The large number of irrigation systems constructed during the past 15 years have served to call attention to the importance of questions of operation policies and methods. Relatively such questions are at present much less thoroughly worked out than the strictly engineering questions of design and construction. This volume is the outgrowth of notes prepared for class use in a course in this subject given by the author at the University of California. It is based on several years personal experience and observation in irrigation work in many of the western states, and on a careful examination of available published material supplemented by correspondence and discussions with many of those connected with the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems. The subject of this volume is necessarily one of practice rather than of theory. As in other similar subjects, practice is materially affected by local conditions, which in irrigation may vary widely in the different irrigated sections. Such variations make it difficult to distinguish the principles of the practice from the local application of such principles. An attempt has been made to give the general principles that may be recognized, illustrated by typical examples of their local application, rather than to fully cover all local variations in practice. No attempt has been made to cover practice outside of the United States. There is very little published material relating to this subject which is generally available. References to the more important articles are given at the end of each chapter; many of these, however, have had only a limited distribution and will be available to only a few readers. Formal references to much other material found to be valuable in the preparation of this volume are not given as these consist of unpublished reports or other material of similar nature. Book Description
Excerpt from Irrigation in Arizona The Americans in Arizona received their first instruction in irriga tion from the Mexicans. The third, or modern, stage of agricultural development may be said to date from the Gadsden purchase in 1854, after which increasing numbers of Americans - military followers, stragglers from the immigrant stream to California, and pioneers by instinct - began to make permanent homes In the land. Book Description
Excerpt from Spray Irrigation The first systems of spray irrigation were an outgrowth of city lawn sprinkling. It was so'on demonstrated that by employing such systems small amounts of water could' be applied advantageously to delicate crops, especially for supplementing an uncertain rainfall. This method also was found particularly well adapted for furnishing relatively small quantities of water to truck and small fruit crops throughout the humid region. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Irrigation Practice Irrigation and dry-farming are rapidly conquering drought. By these twin arts, bountiful and regular harvests may be gathered in the humid regions during the periodic dry seasons; and in the arid regions, the great deserts may be converted into most fruitful fields. Irrigation has a splendid record of success from the begin ning of history; dry-farming has only in recent days extended its conquests into the more arid regions; both have become more powerful in conquering drought as modern science has been applied to them.
