The aim of the present work is to supply the reader with (as far as it is possible to do so) a connected record showing the mam factors which constitute the history of the subject from (about) the period 1850 to our own day; whilst Dr. O'Brien's historical introduction outlines the earlier history from the seventeenth to the middle of the nineteenth century. I am deeply indebted to Mr. John Hooper, Superintendent, Statistics and Intelligence Branch, Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction for Ireland, for the valuable assistance he gave me in the compilation of Part I of Chapter I of this book, as well as for having placed at my disposal works of reference from which I obtained certain statistics embodied herein.
