Excerpt from Modern Atheism: Its Position and Promise; Being the Fernley Lecture of 1877 The subject of this Lecture was chosen for me by a late honoured and beloved friend whose death is the heaviest of the many Connexional bereavements of this year. He was pleased to think that I might expose the logical inconsistencies and the grave practical hazards of modern unbelief: and he looked forward to the execution of the duty allotted to me, and to the delivery of the Lecture here to-day, with an interest which, while it flattered my insufficient talents, encouraged the exertions by which the work, such as it is, has been done. To miss his presence at this moment, and the greeting of his approval at the end of my task, is to finish it in the shadow of death. No man among us was more alive to the perils of speculative licence on the Theism of Christianity than Mr. Perks. His various and careful reading in the literature of theological polemics, made him an able disputant on questions that occupy the border-land of revelation and philosophy: and as a defender of what he believed to be the truth, no one exceeded him in the courage and sincerity of his loyalty to the great Rabbi and Lord of all. That he was right while he lived is proved, so far, by the strength and consolation of his convictions when he died. Those who are able to appreciate the difficulty of bringing within the compass of a lecture even the bare outlines of our subject, will be ready to accord to me the encouragement of their sympathy.
