This book originated from several recent workshops and related activities conducted by the IFIP Working Group 7.6 on "Optimization-Based Computer Aided Modeling and Design." This group has been active for 20 years with the stated objective of developing ”high-performance computer-aided systems to support modeling, decision analysis, optimization and multi-criteria decision making.” Recently, the group has turned its attention to the application of modeling and optimization to service science, management and engineering (SSME). SSME is still a young research field searching for its theoretical underpinnings, and one which offers many opportunities for analytical modeling to not only advance the understanding, but also to help form the foundation of a new discipline. This book is the result of the group's introductory foray into the application of quantitative modeling to the nascent field of service science with special emphasis on the network aspects of services. The 11 papers presented are grouped into sections on Network Science, Comptational and Analytical Modeling, and Knowledge Science. They showcase the value of modeling in a new and timely context and provide many seeds for further exciting research.

This thesis develops a concept for integrating decision support technologies with global computer networks. It introduces a new paradigm for the distribution and use of algorithms, decision support applications, models, and simulations. Under this paradigm, all mechanisms to allow for interactions between providers of technologies and consumers who wish to use them are facilitated by a distributed decision support server. Additionally, this thesis analyzes the concept of distributing decision technologies as a service vice a software product. It develops the initial framework architecture and proposes an infrastructure for a distributed decision support network. Decision support systems have traditionally been developed as stand alone applications which conform to a specific users hardware and software requirements. This leads to reduced sharing and reuse of the application as well as the data, models, and algorithms incorporated within the application. The Internet, WwW, and enabling technologies allow for the dissemination of multimedia information to support diverse groups of remote users. This thesis demonstrates that decision support technologies can also be made available to users of a heterogeneous network in a similar manner.

A service firm is a business that makes its facilities available to others for a fee. Nowadays, many of the management tools and techniques that people use cannot meet the challenges of complex decision-making problems in service firms. This dissertation, therefore, explores two research streams, service firm selection, and service technology planning. The first research stream, the service firm selection problem, is to identify the optimal service firm, which satisfies several predefined selection factors. This selection process typically includes two major stages. During the first stage, the selection criteria identify a limited number of candidate service firms. The second stage involves a detailed examination of candidate service firms to find the most appropriate one. Understanding how to optimize decisions in each of these two selection stages motivates this dissertation's first and second parts. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the first stage of service firm selection, "how to determine the selection criteria in the decision-making problems." The model is developed based on latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). We validate our model by comparing the ranking results with reviews in TripAdvisor.com. The second part of the dissertation is relevant to the second stage, "how to select the optimal service firm." We build a network model based on data envelopment analysis (DEA) and the weighted hyperlink-induced topic search (HITS) algorithm and demonstrate its applicability by case analysis. The second research stream, the service technology planning problem, strategically selects technologies to invest in the service firm, which is discussed in the third part of this dissertation. We construct a network model based on HITS and PageRank algorithms and then present its application with a numerical example.
