Book Description
Abstract: "In process algebras, bisimulation equivalence is typically defined directly in terms of the operational rules of action; it also has an alternative characterisation in terms of a simple modal logic (sometimes called Hennessy-Milner logic [sic]. This paper first defines two forms of bisimulation equivalence for the [pi]-calculus, a process algebra which allows dynamic reconfiguration among processes; it then explores a family of possible logics, with different modal operators. It is proven that two of these logics characterise the two bisimulation equivalences. Also, the relative expressive power of all the logics is exhibited as a lattice."

Book Description
The first edition, published by Acumen in 2000, became a prescribed textbook on modal logic courses. The second edition has been fully revised in response to readers' suggestions, including two new chapters on conditional logic, which was not covered in the first edition. "Modal Logics and Philosophy" is a fully comprehensive introduction to modal logics and their application suitable for course use. Unlike most modal logic textbooks, which are both forbidding mathematically and short on philosophical discussion, "Modal Logics and Philosophy" places its emphasis firmly on showing how useful modal logic can be as a tool for formal philosophical analysis. In part 1 of the book, the reader is introduced to some standard systems of modal logic and encouraged through a series of exercises to become proficient in manipulating these logics. The emphasis is on possible world semantics for modal logics and the semantic emphasis is carried into the formal method, Jeffrey-style truth-trees. Standard truth-trees are extended in a simple and transparent way to take possible worlds into account. Part 2 systematically explores the applications of modal logic to philosophical issues such as truth, time, processes, knowledge and belief, obligation and permission.

Book Description
This book presents 8 tutorial survey papers by leading researchers who lectured at the 5th International School on Formal Methods for the Design of Computer, Communication, and Software Systems, SFM 2005, held in Bertinoro, Italy in April 2005. SFM 2005 was devoted to formal methods and tools for the design of mobile systems and mobile communication infrastructures. The 8 lectures are organized into topical sections on models and languages, scalability and performance, dynamic power management, and middleware support.

Book Description
Time is a fascinating subject that has captured mankind's imagination from ancient times to the present. It has been, and continues to be studied across a wide range of disciplines, from the natural sciences to philosophy and logic. More than two decades ago, Pnueli in a seminal work showed the value of temporal logic in the specification and verification of computer programs. Today, a strong, vibrant international research community exists in the broad community of computer science and AI. This volume presents a number of articles from leading researchers containing state-of-the-art results in such areas as pure temporal/modal logic, specification and verification, temporal databases, temporal aspects in AI, tense and aspect in natural language, and temporal theorem proving. Earlier versions of some of the articles were given at the most recent International Conference on Temporal Logic, University of Manchester, UK. Readership: Any student of the area - postgraduate, postdoctoral or even research professor - will find the book most valuable. Computing professionals requiring state-of-the-art knowledge in the area will appreciate the volume for its leading results and its links to other relevant literature.

Book Description
The present monograph is a slightly revised version of my Habilitations schrift Proof-theoretic Aspects of Intensional and Non-Classical Logics, successfully defended at Leipzig University, November 1997. It collects work on proof systems for modal and constructive logics I have done over the last few years. The main concern is display logic, a certain refinement of Gentzen's sequent calculus developed by Nuel D. Belnap. This book is far from offering a comprehensive presentation of generalized sequent systems for modal logics broadly conceived. The proof-theory of non-classical logics is a rapidly developing field, and even the generalizations of the ordinary notion of sequent listed in Chapter 1 can hardly be presented in great detail within a single volume. In addition to further investigating the various approaches toward generalized Gentzen systems, it is important to compare them and to discuss their relative advantages and disadvantages. An initial attempt at bringing together work on different kinds of proof systems for modal logics has been made in [188]. Another step in the same direction is [196]. Since Chapter 1 contains introductory considerations and, moreover, every remaining chapter begins with some surveying or summarizing remarks, in this preface I shall only emphasize a relation to philosophy that is important to me, register the sources of papers that have entered this book in some form or another, and acknowledge advice and support.

Book Description
ICALP 2008, the 35th edition of the International Colloquium on Automata, Languages and Programming, was held in Reykjavik, Iceland, July 7–11, 2008. ICALP is a series of annual conferences of the European Association for Th- reticalComputer Science(EATCS) which ?rsttook placein 1972.This year, the ICALP program consisted of the established Track A (focusing on algorithms, automata, complexityandgames)andTrackB(focusing onlogic, semanticsand theory of programming), and of the recently introduced Track C (focusing on security and cryptography foundations). In response to the call for papers, the Program Committees received 477 submissions, the highest ever: 269 for Track A, 122 for TrackB and 86 for Track C. Out of these, 126 papers were selected for inclusion in the scienti?c program: 70 papers for Track A, 32 for Track B and 24 for Track C. The selection was made by the Program Committees based on originality, quality, and relevance to theoretical computer science. The quality of the manuscripts was very high indeed, and many deserving papers could not be selected. ICALP 2008 consisted of ?ve invited lectures and the contributed papers.
