Book Description
Crime Prevention: Principles, Perspectives and Practices is a concise, comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of crime prevention. The authors contend that crime prevention strategies should include both social prevention and environmental prevention. It embraces these strategies as an alternative to policing, criminal justice and 'law and order'. Part I presents an overview of the history and theory of crime prevention, featuring chapters on social prevention, environmental prevention and evaluation. Part II explores the practice of crime prevention and the real life challenges of implementation, including policy making, prevention in public places, dealing with social disorder and planning for the future. Crime Prevention provides readers with an understanding of the political dimension of crime prevention and the ability to critically analyse prevention techniques. It is essential reading for undergraduate students of criminology, crime prevention and public policy.

Contact [email protected] for more information. ** This well-received criminology textbook, now in its third edition, argues that crime must be understood as both a social and a political phenomenon. Using this lens, Marginality and Condemnation contends that what is defined as criminal, how we respond to “crime” and why individuals behave in anti-social ways are often the result of individual and systemic social inequalities and disparities in power. Beginning with an overview of criminological discourse, mainstream approaches and new directions in criminological theory, the book is then divided into sections, based on key social inequalities of class, gender, race and age, each of which begins with an outline of the general issues for understanding crime and an introduction that guides readers through the empirical chapters that follow. The studies provide insights into general issues in criminology, ranging from the historical and current nature of crime and criminal justice to the various responses to criminality. Readers are encouraged and challenged to understand crime and justice through concrete analyses rather than abstract argumentation. In addition to a new introductory chapter that confronts how we define crime, measure crime, and understand and use criminology in this millennium, the third edition provides new chapters examining crime in relation to the environment, terrorism, masculinity, children and youth, and Aboriginal gangs and the legacy of colonialism.

Book Description
This report suggests that recognition of violence against women as a health issue, as well as the central involvement and contribution of the health sector, is critical to bringing about change in order to eliminate violence. Evidence is cited regarding the use of health services by abused women and their desire for services to respond to their full range of needs, not those just directly related to abuse. A brief historical overview shows the evolution of the responses to women abuse across Canada, from a primary emphasis on treatment and intervention in the 1970s to a health promotion emphasis in recent years. The report then examines violence against women in the context of two approaches: one considering all conditions that contribute to health (a population health model) and another that looks at violence prevention as a critical issue for promoting health (a health promotion model). Some 30 projects funded by Health Canada are analyzed to explore what has been learned and what tools are available to meet current challenges.
