The general objectives of this study were to provide predictive techniques for air-breathing, particle-laden combustors and experimental data on rates of combustion and/or mixing of particle-laden jets. Jet mixing model predictions were compared with experiments reported in the literature. This led to the development of a turbulent mixing coefficient that improved predictions for systems with nonzero secondary velocity and gave reasonable predictions for reacting jets. The mixing model was extended to include boron particle nonequilibrium effects. Several predictions with this uncoupled model are also shown. A fully coupled turbulent jet mixing model was developed for a nonreacting, particle-gas system. Tests were made using a laboratory air-augmented combustor and a boron-loaded fuel. Mixing rates of particles and of gases were measured, as was extent of combustion of the boron particles. Tests were made using a new jet test facility for measuring mixing rates of particle-laden, nonreacting jets. Mixing rates of particles and gases were separately measured. Work was completed on mixing, chemical-reaction, and combustion processes in turbulent, subsonic, and supersonic flows. Research included high-speed internal flows of interest to scramjet mixing and combustion, aimed at flow-control and flame holding issues. The control authority and mixing in subsonic and transonic flows affected by mass injection and heat release was quantified. In parallel, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with Sub-Grid Scale (SGS) modeling of these flows was conducted with codes verified against predictions of Linear Stability Analysis (LSA) theory. Research on hydrocarbon combustion was conducted on premixed methane-air, ethane-air, and (diluted) ethylene-air flames. Detailed measurements of flame extinction strain-rate and flame speed were obtained at different compositions at atmospheric pressure. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of axisymmetric unsteady flows in both cold and chemically reacting impinging jets with full chemistry were also performed. Experimental investigations of the three-dimensional full-field structure of scalar dispersion fields in grid turbulence were initiated.

A systematic control of mixture formation with modern high-pressure injection systems enables us to achieve considerable improvements of the combustion pr- ess in terms of reduced fuel consumption and engine-out raw emissions. However, because of the growing number of free parameters due to more flexible injection systems, variable valve trains, the application of different combustion concepts within different regions of the engine map, etc., the prediction of spray and m- ture formation becomes increasingly complex. For this reason, the optimization of the in-cylinder processes using 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) becomes increasingly important. In these CFD codes, the detailed modeling of spray and mixture formation is a prerequisite for the correct calculation of the subsequent processes like ignition, combustion and formation of emissions. Although such simulation tools can be viewed as standard tools today, the predictive quality of the sub-models is c- stantly enhanced by a more accurate and detailed modeling of the relevant pr- esses, and by the inclusion of new important mechanisms and effects that come along with the development of new injection systems and have not been cons- ered so far. In this book the most widely used mathematical models for the simulation of spray and mixture formation in 3D CFD calculations are described and discussed. Turbulent reactive flows are of common occurrance in combustion engineering, chemical reactor technology and various types of engines producing power and thrust utilizing chemical and nuclear fuels. Pollutant formation and dispersion in the atmospheric environment and in rivers, lakes and ocean also involve interactions between turbulence, chemical reactivity and heat and mass transfer processes. Considerable advances have occurred over the past twenty years in the understanding, analysis, measurement, prediction and control of turbulent reactive flows. Two main contributors to such advances are improvements in instrumentation and spectacular growth in computation: hardware, sciences and skills and data processing software, each leading to developments in others. Turbulence presents several features that are situation-specific. Both for that reason and a number of others, it is yet difficult to visualize a so-called solution of the turbulence problem or even a generalized approach to the problem. It appears that recognition of patterns and structures in turbulent flow and their study based on considerations of stability, interactions, chaos and fractal character may be opening up an avenue of research that may be leading to a generalized approach to classification and analysis and, possibly, prediction of specific processes in the flowfield. Predictions for engineering use, on the other hand, can be foreseen for sometime to come to depend upon modeling of selected features of turbulence at various levels of sophistication dictated by perceived need and available capability.
