Book Description
Excerpt from Missouri Party Struggles in the Civil War Period Under the operation of a solicitude to avert the threatened dissolution of the Union, antislavery opinions lost ground in the early months of 1861. But when war came, in its heat and glare, radical opinions developed rapidly. The policy embodied in Fremont's famous proclamation of August 31, 1861, declaring freed the slaves of Missourians taking a against the United States, became the point of departure for a new antislavery agitation and a new political division. Before the close of 1861 the Union party was separating into two wings, styled respectively the Radicals and Conservatives. We must give up slavery or we must give up the Union, was the position assumed by the former; and they demanded that the policy laid down in Fremont's proclamation, which had been overruled by the President, should be carried out. If a man is right, replied one of their number to a eriti cism from Governor Gamble, he can not be too radical; and if he is wrong, he can not be too conservative. These words aptly characterize the whole position of the Radical party. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Jasper County, Missouri, in the Civil War Partisan bands serving the south are spoken of in this volume as guerrillas. It should be understood that the word guerrilla does not carry any sense of appro brium in itself. It merely means one who is not a mem ber of a regular military organization and who carries on guerrilla warfare. Confederate officers frequently speak of the Missouri partisans as guerrillas and in some sections of the country there were federal guerrillas. For instance the Kentuckians that mortally wounded and captured Quantrill were known as Terrill's Federal Guerrillas. The word bushwhacker may or may not be used in a degratory sense. It seems to carry the sense of one who fights from ambush or concealment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Rebels on the Border offers a remarkably compelling and significant study of the Civil War South's highly contested and bloodiest border states: Kentucky and Missouri. By far the most complex examination to date, the book sharply focuses on the "borderland" between the free North and the Confederate South. As a result, Rebels on the Border deepens and enhances understanding of the sectional conflict, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. After slaves in central Kentucky and Missouri gained their emancipation, author Aaron Astor contends, they transformed informal kin and social networks of resistance against slavery into more formalized processes of electoral participation and institution building. At the same time, white politics in Kentucky's Bluegrass and Missouri's Little Dixie underwent an electoral realignment in response to the racial and social revolution caused by the war and its aftermath. Black citizenship and voting rights provoked a violent white reaction and a cultural reinterpretation of white regional identity. After the war, the majority of wartime Unionists in the Bluegrass and Little Dixie joined former Confederate guerrillas in the Democratic Party in an effort to stifle the political ambitions of former slaves. Rebels on the Border is not simply a story of bitter political struggles, partisan guerrilla warfare, and racial violence. Like no other scholarly account of Kentucky and Missouri during the Civil War, it places these two crucial heartland states within the broad context of local, southern, and national politics.

Book Description
During the Civil War, the state of Missouri witnessed the most widespread, prolonged, and destructive guerrilla fighting in American history. With its horrific combination of robbery, arson, torture, murder, and swift and bloody raids on farms and settlements, the conflict approached total war, engulfing the whole populace and challenging any notion of civility. Michael Fellman's Inside War captures the conflict from "inside," drawing on a wealth of first-hand evidence, including letters, diaries, military reports, court-martial transcripts, depositions, and newspaper accounts. He gives us a clear picture of the ideological, social, and economic forces that divided the people and launched the conflict. Along with depicting how both Confederate and Union officials used the guerrilla fighters and their tactics to their own advantage, Fellman describes how ordinary civilian men and women struggled to survive amidst the random terror perpetuated by both sides; what drove the combatants themselves to commit atrocities and vicious acts of vengeance; and how the legend of Jesse James arose from this brutal episode in the American Civil War.
