Book Description
Excerpt from Mineral Physiology and Physiography Intimately connected with this subject, and at the same time bearing directly upon the different hypotheses touch ing the genesis of crystalline rocks, is the history of the serpentines, which have been alternately regarded as igneous and as' aqueous, as exotic and as indigenous masses, and in either case were supposed to have been the subject of various metasomatic changes. In the tenth essay, the origimand the geognostic relations of these rocks, as found alike among eozoic and paleozoic strata, are considered, and in this connection the history of many crystalline eozoic groups on both continents, but espe cially in central and southern Europe, has been reviewed, - thus continuing the subject begun in the preceding essay.
