Book Description
Fundamentals of Friction, unlike many books on tribology, is devoted to one specific topic: friction. After introductory chapters on scientific and engineering perspectives, the next section contains the necessary background within the areas of contact mechanics, surfaces and adhesion. Then on to fracture, deformation and interface shear, from the macroscopic behavior of materials in frictional contact to microscopic models of uniform and granular interfaces. Lubrication by solids, liquids and gases is presented next, from classical flow properties to the reorganization of monolayers of molecules under normal and shear stresses. A section on new approaches at the nano- and atomic scales covers the physics and chemistry of interfaces, an array of visually exciting simulations, using molecular dynamics, of solids and liquids in sliding contact, and related AFM/STM studies. Following a section on machines and measurements, the final chapter discusses future issues in friction.

Book Description
This book sets out to describe the importance of adhesion in our Universe. Although we believe that the universe is expanding and flying apart, we can also see that the Earth and its parts are sticking together with great tenacity. Gravitation explains part of this attraction on earth, but is insufficient to explain why adhesives stick jumbo jets together or why our bodies do not fall apart. To understand the strong attractions between earthly matter we must introduce the idea of molecular adhesion; the fact that all molecules attract each other with a considerable force. This idea at first seems paradoxical because we can identify situations where adhesion is very strong, for example when paint sticks to a surface, but we can also see cases where adhesion is very weak, when sand flows through an hour glass. The objective of the book is to provide explanations for these apparently perverse effects.

Book Description
Each year, about Easter time, we are reminded of the continuing growth in the use of adhesives. The Annual Conference here at The City University provides a focal point for discussion, both formal and informal, on expansion and development. For those who attend the Conference its rewards and usefulness are immediate and obvious, but its influence extends to a wider audience through the regular publication of the papers. Here in Volume 11 of the series we offer the latest instalment, the papers presented and discussed in 1986. May I express gratitude to all those who, by their continuing support, both in presenting papers and in attending the meeting, make the whole event so successful and rewarding. Thank you all, very much. K. W. ALLEN Vll Contents Preface . v 1. The Strength and Durability of Adhesive Joints Made Underwater M. R. Bowditch, 1. D. Clarke and K. 1. Book Description
Although it is widely recognized that friction, wear and lubrication are linked together in a single interdisciplinary complex of scientific learning and technological practice, fragmented and specialized approaches still predominate. In this book, the authors examine lubrication from an interdisciplinary viewpoint. They demonstrate that once the treatment of lubrication is released from the confines of the fluid film concept, this interdisciplinary approach comes into full play. Tribological behavior in relation to lubrication is then examined from two major points of view: one is mechanical, not only with respect to the properties and behavior of the lubricant but also of the surfaces being lubricated. The other is chemical and encompasses the chemistry of the lubricant, the surfaces and the ambient surroundings. It is in the emphasis on the interaction of the basic mechanical and chemical processes in lubrication that this book differs from conventional treatments.
