In the past decades, European cities have set ambitious goals for low carbon transition, but regional sustainability services (RSUS) lack an active user base. Only 15% of consumers take sustainability of these into account during a purchase and "rebound effect" can reach 80%. At the current pace, RSUS will fail to develop into sustainable business models and cities' efforts remain insufficient to meet targets set for 2050. The European project "SimpliCITY" (JPI Urban Europe; running from 10/2018-6/2021) aims to boost the digital competences of the urban communities in Salzburg, AT and Uppsala, SE. Both pilot cities, Salzburg and Uppsala, are so-called smart cities with different action fields, targets and coordination offices. This report informs about the activities and results of SimpliCITY in which a hybrid approach was developed, using both physical and digital participation and incentive methods and tools. SimpliCITY examined how to increase the usage rate of regional sustainability services and how to drive the community towards these services by means of two novel web platforms and applications ("Stadtmacherei Salzburg" and "Cykla med Pelle"). Technological change is a central feature of modern societies and a powerful source for social change. There is an urgent task to direct these new technologies towards sustainability, but society lacks perspectives, instruments and policies to accomplish this. There is no blueprint for a sustainable future, and it is necessary to experiment with alternative paths that seem promising. Various new transport technologies promise to bring sustainability benefits. But as this book shows, important lessons are often overlooked because the experiments are not designed to challenge the basic assumptions about established patterns of transport choices. Learning how to organise the process of innovation implementation is essential if the maximum impact is to be achieved - it is here that strategic niche management offers new perspectives. The book uses a series of eight recent experiments with electric vehicles, carsharing schemes, bicycle pools and fleet management to illustrate the means by which technological change must be closely linked to social change if successful implementation is to take place. The Global Roadmap of Action Toward Sustainable Mobility is the culmination of a joint effort by the Sustainable Mobility for All (SuM4All) to develop a comprehensive policy framework to assist decision makers in cities and countries as well as practitioners at development banks to identify gaps, necessary steps, and appropriate instruments to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and improve the sustainability of their transport sector.On the basis of the imperative established by the Global Mobility Report (2017), the GRA private sector consultations paper and the 6 GRA policy papers (Urban, Rural, Gender, Efficiency, Safety and Green mobility) comes this centerpiece report - embodying the collective knowledge of all 55 SuM4All Member organizations and 180 experts. It was developed through an iterative process to ensure its relevance and practicality. Over 50 policy decision makers at the country and city levels engaged on various drafts and to share their experiences, and more than 25 large corporations were questioned on constraints in the enabling environment to innovate and create the solutions of the future. Donors supporting this effort over an 18-month period included: the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Bank and the Michelin Foundation.With this tool in hand, SuM4All is now equipped to engage with decision makers in a new dialogue on mobility and support their transition towards sustainable mobility. This open access book is the first to systematically introduce the principles of urban informatics and its application to every aspect of the city that involves its functioning, control, management, and future planning. It introduces new models and tools being developed to understand and implement these technologies that enable cities to function more efficiently – to become ‘smart’ and ‘sustainable’. The smart city has quickly emerged as computers have become ever smaller to the point where they can be embedded into the very fabric of the city, as well as being central to new ways in which the population can communicate and act. When cities are wired in this way, they have the potential to become sentient and responsive, generating massive streams of ‘big’ data in real time as well as providing immense opportunities for extracting new forms of urban data through crowdsourcing.
