Excerpt from Methods of Eradicating the Common Barberry (Berberis Vulgaris L.) In Rock County, in southern Wisconsin, about escaped bar berry bushes were found in a 10-acre field. This field at one time had been used as a nursery, and when that was abandoned acedar trees were set out at about 30-foot intervals. The trees had reached a good size when the barberries were found. Most of the bushes were growing under the trees and close around the trunks. Here the birds or cattle had dropped the seed and the young plants had found protection while establishing themselves. At the time of the eradication, in August, 1920, the bushes varied from small plants, a foot or so high, to good-sized, well-established bushes. The weather was hot and the ground very dry, so that digging was difficult. The roots of the cedars also interfered with the work. Six men worked approximately five days, and a team 'of horses was employed for a full day. The total cost was $17 The estimated number of bushes of all sizes eradicated was which made the average cost of eradicating a bush cents. Excerpt from Progress of the Barberry Eradication Campaign in Illinois in 1929 The production of rust - resistant varieties of grains probably will be much more successful, however, when all common barberry bushes have been eradicated. The reason for this is shown in the recent important discoveries made in the Canadian Rust Research Laboratories at Winnipeg and by Dr. E. C. Stakman and his coworkers at the University of Minnesota. Both of these groups conducting independent research have proved that entirely new strains of stem rust are produced if two_different forms cross-breed on barberry leaves. The certainty that new forms of the dangerous disease may appear suddenly, makes the eradication of the common barberry all the more imperative, since it is on the barberry alone that this crossing can occur in nature. The new and appar ently resistant varieties of grains are not safe with barberries near. If for no other reason than to protect the new kinds of superwheat which are now in the process of being developed, all common barberry bushes should 1x3 destroyed. Excerpt from Progress of the Barberry Eradication Campaign in Michigan in 1930 These are some of the reasons why so many large escaped barberry bushes bearing fruit are found in Michigan. These bushes are old enough to be the parents and grandparents of a host of others scattered among the wooded hills, in cedar swamps, and on the sand dunes along Lake Michigan. A survey was organized to find and destroy the largest number of common barberry bushes in the shortest possible time in order to quickly reduce the number of fruiting bushes. Many bar berries were missed ih this first hurried search. Originally all bushes were pulled or dug, but because so many of the roots, which were left in the ground by this method, Sprouted the use of chem icals as killing agents was introduced. Common salt or kerosene properly applied killed the bushes and prevented all sprouting. New seedling bushes continually Spring up, however, and it has been found that seeds often germinate after lying inactive on the ground for years.
